Job Summary

The Failsafe Officer (FO) will support the Ophthalmology service and ensure patients are managed within the guideline timescales. The post of Failsafe Officer will provide the interface between clinicians, supporting staff and patients to manage and develop the overall patient pathway.

Responsibilities
  • Oversee day‑to‑day management plans for patients through liaison with clinicians for investigations, treatment plan, review and assessments, and ongoing treatment.
  • Ensure all patient events are accurately recorded and timely on the Patient Administration System (PAS).
  • Maintain an accurate patient tracking system and monitor compliance with defined treatment timelines.
  • Coordinate with clinicians, service managers, waiting list staff and outpatient appointments to address patients not booked within required timescales and implement corrective actions.
  • Work with the Lead Clinician and Ophthalmology Access Manager on service demands and available capacity, implementing changes to maintain a fully compliant service.
  • Provide regular reports on patient pathways and tracking compliance to Trust clinicians, managers and PCT representatives.
  • Co‑ordinate patient clinical pathway for individual patients and maintain data integrity of the PAS system through reconciliation and validation of data held on other systems.
  • Prioritise workload, work autonomously and often under pressure.
  • Support the Lead Clinician and Ophthalmology Access Manager in development of service information systems, pathway documentation, IT database development, and service reporting.
  • Arrange meetings, take minutes, and provide day‑to‑day support for project management of service developments across sites.
