Job description

We are working closely alongside a Local Authority in Somerset to assist with the appointment of a Facility Maintenance Operator, on a 4.5-month contract, likely to be extended at clients discretion. Please apply with your CV for immediate consideration., The Facilities Officer plays a key role in ensuring that Somerset Councils buildings are safe, compliant, operational and welcoming for staff, visitors, and partner organisations. Working as part of the Facilities & Environment team, you will conduct statutory compliance checks, support health and safety requirements, manage building access and security, and provide onsite support to ensure facilities are fit for purpose. This is a hands‑on role involving regular site visits, basic maintenance tasks, contractor coordination, and communication with building users. The role requires strong attention to detail, the ability to manage workload independently, and a commitment to maintaining safe and functional environments across a wide range of council properties. Responsibilities:

  • Record compliance data accurately in council systems such as Civica and B-Safe.
  • Assist with the preparation and review of risk assessments and compliance documentation.
  • Maintain building security systems including issuing access cards and onboarding new building users.
  • Provide front‑line facilities support through face‑to‑face, email and telephone communication.
  • Assist staff with workstation/DSE assessments, office moves, equipment requests and general building queries. GCSEs Grade AC (or equivalent) in English and Maths.
  • At least 6 months experience in a facilities, property, compliance, building support or health & safety‑related role.
  • Full driving licence and ability to travel between sites.
  • Confident using IT systems for data entry and reporting.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to work independently and manage routine and reactive tasks effectively.
