Job description

As Facilities Team Leader, you will lead a diverse team delivering essential services across 3 hospital sites. From portering, catering, cleaning and waste management, your leadership will ensure a smooth and safe environment for colleagues, patients and visitors.

You will be the first line of management, coordinating rotas, resources and service standards while fostering a culture of professionalism and care.

This is a hands‑on role where no two days are the same. You will be empowered to make decisions, respond to incidents, and drive service improvements. Your ability to plan, delegate and motivate will be key to maintaining high standards and supporting both staff and patients. You will also play a vital role in health and safety and ensuring compliance and readiness at all times.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will manage the day to day working of Catering, Cleaning, Portering, laundry services and waste management within the hospital sites in conjunction with the Facilities Management, Ward Manager and Matron to ensure a safe and hygienic environment to support patient care. This is maintained by ensuring a range of cleaning, housekeeping and catering duties are carried out.

The post holder will establish effective working links with all hospital staff, patients and external agencies.

The post holder is responsible for E‑roster within facilities, and will input all staff hours, ensuring they are within the agreed budget limits. The post holder will allocate staff on a daily basis and amend staffing to cover sickness and annual leave.

The post holder is expected to use their own initiative, make decisions and deal with departmental, patient and contractor queries.

The post holder will have the ability to prioritise and manage a challenging workload without supervision on a daily basis and cope with interruptions from staff, telephone calls, emails and contractors, many of which require immediate attention.

The post holder must ensure compliance with the NHS National Cleaning Standards, Trust Operational Cleaning Manual etc.

The post holder will manage the production of safe catering for patients, staff and visitors.

The post holder will report any estate requests, monitor outcomes and completion of jobs.

Qualifications
  • Maths
  • Evidence of a good standard of Literacy, English language skills
  • Vocational Level 3 qualification appropriate to the post, or working towards within agreed timescale
  • Level 3 Award in Food Safety in Catering, or completed within agreed timescale
  • Understanding of Infection control procedures
  • Knowledge of Health & Safety regulations
  • Knowledge of Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH) is required as cleaning chemicals form part of the cleaning procedure
  • Knowledge of Catering and Hazard Analysis Critical Control Points (HACCP)
Experience
  • Experience of working with multi‑disciplinary teams and external agencies
  • Evidence of previous team management experience
  • Significant supervisory management experience
  • A proven employment history in cleaning and or catering
  • Experience of using own judgement and decision‑making skills in dealing with day‑to‑day issues
  • Experience in managing confidential issues
  • Experience of the use of Microsoft Office packages e.g. Word, Excel and Outlook
  • Experience of time management using own judgement in prioritising and rescheduling
