Job description

We are seeking a Facilities Assistant/ Theatre Portering to join our team. This role primarily involves portering duties, but may also include cleaning and catering responsibilities in clinical, non-clinical, and public areas of the premises. The successful candidate is expected to meet the National Specifications for Cleanliness in the NHS, maintaining high standards of cleaning and housekeeping. Experience in a similar role is desirable, but enthusiasm and teamwork skills are equally important.

Band 2 position

Hours are 11am - 7pm, Monday to Friday.

Main duties of the job

Provide Facilities/Portering support to the Trust.

Refer to the detailed job description for specific duties and responsibilities.

This role includes Domestic, Catering, and Portering duties, with a primary focus on Portering services.

Maintain a clean and hygienic environment for staff, patients, and visitors, in line with the National Standards of Cleanliness.

The role requires flexibility, innovation, and self-motivation to meet operational goals and support professional development.

Support the Portering, Domestic, and Catering Teams with various tasks.

Ensure compliance with the 2021 National Standards of Cleanliness and Food Safety Hygiene Regulations 2006.

Job responsibilities
Key Responsibilities
  • Wear a correct and clean uniform during duty.
  • Participate in departmental meetings as appropriate.
  • Contribute positively to team effectiveness and efficiency.
  • Perform tasks that may vary depending on team or location, including:
Catering Responsibilities
  • Adhere to food hygiene policies, including HACCP, personal hygiene, and cleaning procedures.
  • Prepare meals, salads, sandwiches, and other food items as required.
  • Ensure patient meals are correctly placed in ward trolleys for service.
  • Prepare and serve food and beverages.
  • Use cash registers if required.
  • Maintain security at all times.
  • Complete departmental paperwork.
  • Assist in serving meals to patients, visitors, and staff.
  • Manage crockery and cutlery in advance of service.
  • Ensure food presentation, portion control, temperature, and quality standards are met.
Patient/Customer Care Responsibilities
  • Maintain confidentiality regarding patients, staff, and hospital business, complying with GDPR.
  • Communicate effectively with colleagues, patients, visitors, and the public.
Cleaning Responsibilities
  • Manage curtains, blinds, floors, waste bins, and sanitary areas.
  • Maintain equipment in a clean, functional condition.
  • Respect patient privacy and dignity during duties.
  • Clean beds, replenish linens, and perform low-level cleaning tasks.
  • Replenish consumables such as paper towels, soap, and toilet rolls.
  • Work flexibly across Trust sites as needed.
  • Properly store all items.
  • Manage inpatient menus and dishware, including cleaning and returning items.
  • Transport goods, waste, medical gas cylinders, and food trolleys as required, with full training provided.

Qualifications
  • Basic numeracy and literacy skills

Experience
  • Knowledge of safe, hygienic cleaning standards
  • Experience in domestic cleaning and food preparation environments
  • Experience working in a team
  • Experience in NHS domestic, catering, or portering services
  • Portering experience in similar settings
  • Understanding of catering products and ingredients
Knowledge

  • Understanding of COSHH and Risk Assessments
Disclosure and Barring Service Check
