Job summary

Enigma People is seeking a Laser Design Engineer in Edinburgh to drive the design and development of ultrashort pulse fibre laser systems. You will participate across the product lifecycle from feasibility studies to production, collaborating with a global team of experts.

You will lead prototype development, performance troubleshooting, and detailed reporting while applying Zemax modelling and Python data analysis to optimise laser architectures.

Qualifications

• Degree or higher or equivalent in a solid state or fibre laser-based area or demonstrable experience of working in a laser manufacturing or development environment.
• Ability to seek innovative solutions to problems.
• Excellent communication and people skills with ability to work closely and collaboratively with colleagues.
• Clear understanding of the principles of optics and lasers.
• Demonstrable practical ability in the creation of breadboard laser systems or of assembling and optimising laser systems in a manufacturing environment.
• Experienced in the use of test equipment, both optical (power meters, spectrometers, auto-correlators, etc.) and electrical (oscilloscopes, signal generators, spectrum analysers, etc.).
• Experienced in the use of optical modelling software packages (for example Zemax) and/or the development of optical models via custom code.
• General understanding of electronics and control systems.
• Ability to work on multiple tasks and manage priorities.
• Ability to work from general instructions for new assignments either in isolation or as part of a wider team.

Responsibilities

Our clients develop laser systems that are used in a wide variety of markets including renewable energy, microelectronics, fundamental research, life sciences and medicine.

The engineers sought tend to be highly collaborative and detail-oriented engineer who are keen to be vital performers in excellent R&D teams and who are keen to lead cutting-edge laser systems design.

The roles typically include involvement through the entire product lifecycle from feasibility experiments to production.

• A knowledge of control systems and a familiarity with circuit diagrams to debug complex system issues.


• Experience of leadership through an R+D project.
