Exercise Specialist Position Summary

The Cardiovascular/Pulmonary Rehabilitation and Fitness Plus Exercise Specialist provides fitness assessments, exercise prescriptions, education and lifestyle modifications for employees seeking to improve their fitness level and overall health. In addition, the Exercise Specialist provides one-on-one training to interested participants and Phase III/IV Cardiovascular and Pulmonary Rehabilitation patients. Other responsibilities include health promotion through community outreach, bulletin boards, newsletters, incentive programs, worksite wellness screenings and programs, and educational lectures. The Exercise Specialist instructs indoor cycling, circuit weight training, and other fitness classes for both employees and community members. Additionally, the Exercise Specialist provides assistance with the Maintenance Cardiovascular/Pulmonary Rehabilitation program at Atlantic General Hospital and Peninsula Regional Medical Center as needed. The inventory, distribution/delivery of medications may be required.

Exercise Specialist Position Requirements

Education

• BS - Exercise Science or Community Health Education

Certifications

• AHA, BLS certification required
• American College of Sports Medicine Exercise Specialist or Health Fitness Instructor certification required or willing to complete within two year of employment.
• ACLS certification required or willing to complete within one year of employment.

Experience

• Hours rearrangement based on work demand, minimum of 40 hours per week/salary position
• Experience in formulating exercise prescriptions from exercise tolerance tests.
• Knowledge of medications and effects on exercise performance.
• Knowledge of the application of exercise therapy for patients with co-morbidities, (i.e., pulmonary disease, diabetes, PVD, etc.).
• Knowledge of EKG monitoring and interpretation of arrhythmias.
• Experience in leading group exercise sessions, to include warm-ups, cool-downs, circuit weight training.
• Strong knowledge base in cardiovascular physiology, exercise physiology, and ACSM guidelines required.
• Broad knowledge base on health education and wellness programming.
• Experience in aerobic instruction and/or instructor.
• Confidence in working with adult and geriatric patient population and good personnel interaction required.

Exercise Specialist Work Schedule

• Monday-Friday; typically days, some evenings.
• Occasionally asked to work for special events.
• Hours rearranged based on work demand.
