Position Overview

The Executive Editor will drive Newsweek’s editorial vision and set the agenda for digital news coverage, standards, and strategy. This person will lead a diverse newsroom, champion the adoption of artificial intelligence, and ensure that Newsweek’s journalism is at the forefront of quality, speed, exclusivity, and innovation. They’ll shape the future of a global news brand, lead a cutting-edge newsroom with offices in the US and UK and build a reputation for its innovation in storytelling. This position reports to the Editor-in-Chief and has direct accountability to the Chief Content Officer on budgets and audience strategy.

Key Responsibilities
  • Oversee day-to-day digital news operations, including in the US, UK, and Asia, ensuring timely, impactful, and fair journalism.
  • Develop and execute strategies to grow Newsweek’s digital audience and engagement across platforms.
  • Integrate AI-powered tools and workflows to enhance news gathering, verification, production, and personalization.
  • Mentor, inspire, and manage editors, reporters, and digital specialists across time zones.
  • Ensure quality control and uphold Newsweek’s editorial standards.
  • Identify the stories that matter most to our readers and allocate resources to get them told across global platforms and Newsweek’s subscription services.
  • Foster a culture of collaboration, agility, and experimentation.
  • Marry data and strong editorial instincts in everything from strategic planning to moment-to-moment decision making.
  • Partner cross functionally with departments adjacent to the newsroom, including the Audience Growth & Strategy team, People (HR) Team, and Legal Team.
  • Communicate strategies and updates proactively through various channels including town halls, team meetings, and written updates.
  • Review the department’s budget, planning, and financial performance; make investment decisions.
  • Any other reasonable duties to meet the needs of the business.
Requirements
  • Extensive relevant experience in digital newsrooms, with proven editorial leadership in fast-paced environments including people management.
  • Fingertips feel for national conversation in the United States and how it shapes the agenda across culture, politics, business and lifestyle.
  • Superior news judgment and a sharp editorial eye. They must be a strong editor and an exceptional framer of stories.
  • Deep experience with audience development strategies, SEO, social platforms, and analytics.
  • Understanding and support of how AI is changing the internet and consumer behavior.
  • Willingness to work across multiple time zones. Expected travel on a quarterly basis between New York and London bureaus.
