The Fishermen's Mission is the only charity solely dedicated to supporting fishermen and their families (both active and retired) in the UK. Our objective is to relieve despair or deprivation by providing emergency support alongside practical, financial, spiritual and emotional care. We seek five new trustees to help advance this mission.

Diversity and Eligibility

We welcome applicants from diverse backgrounds, including:

  • Commercial fishermen and their family members.
  • Experienced healthcare managers.
  • Leaders in business.
  • Individuals with a legal background (especially employment law) or expertise in human resources, charity governance, marketing and public relations.
Responsibilities

As a trustee, you will share the collective responsibility for governance and strategic direction of the charity. Your duties include:

  • Ensuring the charity remains true to its purpose and delivers meaningful, lasting impact.
  • Directing the affairs of the Fishermen's Mission, providing oversight of the Chief Executive and holding them to account.
  • Managing resources responsibly to maintain financial stability and solvency.
  • Acting with reasonable care, skill, and prudence in all matters relating to the charity.
  • Operating in the best interests of the Fishermen's Mission and managing conflicts of interest.
Qualifications and Requirements
  • Minimum age of 16 years.
  • Not disqualified under the Charities Act unless a waiver has been obtained by the Commission.
  • Must be a 'fit and proper person'.
  • Commitment to equal opportunities and active promotion of diversity.

Committees and Meetings

The Council meets four times a year – twice in person during the day, primarily in London, and twice online.

Three sub‑committees meet annually – one three times each year, the others twice each year – usually online.

The Council also seeks to meet once annually for an in‑person 'away day' (afternoon session, overnight stay, morning session).
