Job summary

Kenect Recruitment Ltd represents a civil engineering business seeking an experienced Estimator in South Derbyshire to prepare tenders and cost estimates, and to manage the commercial detail behind projects.

You will work with the wider team to keep tenders competitive and viable, review drawings and specs, obtain quotations, and support post-tender negotiations. This permanent role pays £44,000–£52,000 p/a (DOE) with standard hours and a benefits package.

Qualifications

  • Has experience as an Estimator within civil engineering or construction.
  • Experience preparing tenders and detailed cost estimates.
  • Strong understanding of construction costs, materials, plant and subcontractor pricing.
  • Confident reading/interpreting drawings, specs and scopes of work.
  • Excellent attention to detail and commercial awareness.
  • Able to manage multiple tenders and deadlines.
  • Confident communicating with clients, subcontractors, suppliers and internal teams.
  • Commercially minded, organised and proactive.
  • Capable of working independently and in a small team.

Responsibilities

  • Preparing and submitting tenders and estimates for civil engineering projects.
  • Producing accurate cost estimates, budgets and pricing; maintaining records.
  • Reviewing drawings, specifications and scopes of work.
  • Obtaining and assessing quotations for subcontract works, materials and plant.
  • Comparing supplier and subcontractor quotations for competitive pricing.
  • Identifying commercial risks and opportunities within tenders.
  • Liaising with clients and their representatives regarding tender requirements.
  • Collaborating with Contracts Managers, QS, Buyers and Designers.
  • Supporting the tender process from enquiry to submission; post-tender negotiations.

Job description

Job Title: Estimator
Location: South Derbyshire
Salary: £44,000-£52,000p/a (DOE)
Hours: 8:45am-5:15pm with 1hr lunch (flexibility can be agreed upon)

This role is permanent from day one.

The Opportunity

We are currently recruiting for an experienced Estimator to join an established civil engineering team.
This is an excellent opportunity for an Estimator with a background in civil engineering, construction or infrastructure who is confident working on tenders, producing accurate estimates and managing the commercial detail behind projects.
You'll work closely with the wider team to ensure tenders are competitive, accurate and commercially viable, while building strong relationships with clients, subcontractors and suppliers.

Key Responsibilities
  • Preparing and submitting tenders and estimates for civil engineering projects
  • Producing accurate cost estimates, budgets and pricing and maintaining accurate records of them
  • Reviewing drawings, specifications, scopes of work and project requirements
  • Obtaining and assessing quotations for subcontract works, materials, plant and other project requirements
  • Comparing supplier and subcontractor quotations to ensure competitive pricing
  • Identifying potential commercial risks and opportunities within tenders
  • Liaising with clients and their representatives regarding tender requirements
  • Working closely with Contracts Managers, Quantity Surveyors, Buyers, Designers and other departments
  • Supporting the tender process from initial enquiry through to submission
  • Assisting with post-tender negotiations and providing clarification where required
  • Ensuring estimates are prepared accurately and within agreed deadlines
About You

We're looking for someone who:

  • Has previous experience working as an Estimator within civil engineering or construction
  • Has experience preparing tenders and detailed cost estimates
  • Has a strong understanding of construction costs, materials, plant and subcontractor pricing
  • Is confident reading and interpreting drawings, specifications and scopes of work
  • Has strong commercial awareness and excellent attention to detail
  • Can manage multiple tenders and deadlines effectively
  • Is confident communicating with clients, subcontractors, suppliers and internal teams
  • Is commercially minded, organised and proactive
  • Can work independently while also being a strong team player (current team size is two)
