Job description

Priority Candidates will be considered in the first instance.

Wigan Town Hall/ Various Estates.

Salary: Grade 4, £25,583 - £26,824 per annum. £13.26 - £13.90 per hour.

37 hours per week.

We're on a journey to build a workforce reflective of our Borough. We are committed to fostering diverse teams where everybody can bring their authentic selves to work and feel that they belong. If you want to work for a Council where everybody is encouraged to meet their full potential and make a difference in our neighbourhoods, we would love to hear from you!

Your role

Our Estate Caretaking Team is made up of dedicated individuals who are the visible presence across our housing estates. As an Estate Caretaker, you will play a key role in maintaining clean, safe, and welcoming environments for our residents.

Day-to-day, you will be responsible for tasks such as litter picking, the removal of fly-tipped waste, and carrying out strimming and general grounds maintenance work.

You will work closely with Neighbourhood Officers and engage directly with tenants, providing advice and support to help maintain the quality of our communities.

This is a hands-on and rewarding role where you can make a real difference to the look and feel of our estates and the wellbeing of our residents.

About you

We are looking for someone who contributes positively to a strong health and safety culture, consistently adopting safe working practices, following risk assessments, and reporting any issues or incidents promptly.

You will be committed to promoting equality, diversity, and inclusion, ensuring that services are accessible and responsive to the needs of all customers. A professional approach is essential, alongside the ability to foster a respectful and supportive working environment.

You will also be flexible and willing to undertake additional duties as required, in line with the responsibilities of the role. An understanding of data protection is important, and you will be expected to handle information responsibly, ensuring compliance with GDPR and organisational retention policies.

About us

Wigan Council has been voted ‘Overall Council of the Year’ at the APSE (Association for Public Service Excellence) Awards. We are signed up to the Greater Manchester Continuous Service Commitment ensuring that your service will be continuous or 'unbroken' between the supporting organisations.

The Progress with Unity plan is a place movement for change for the next decade, bringing a new era for Wigan Borough. It draws on the strengths of our individual organisations, recognising that together we can achieve much more for our communities by delivering on our two place missions: create fair opportunities for all children, families, residents and businesses and make our towns and neighbourhoods flourish for those who live and work in them.

As an Estate Caretaker, you will be part of a large and supportive team responsible for maintaining Wigan Council’s housing stock and estates. This is a varied and hands‑on role where you will play an important part in ensuring our estates are safe, clean, and welcoming places to live.

The role benefits from the Council’s generous flexi‑time scheme, offering a good work‑life balance, and you will have access to a vehicle for operational duties.

You will gain valuable experience and insight into housing management, giving you the opportunity to develop your skills while making a real and visible difference to the lives of people living on our estates.

Here at Wigan, we are proud to support flexible working patterns, when the service can accommodate this. We also take a blended approach to where we work, depending on the work we do. This may include working from home, the office, or the community. We like to thank our employees for their hard work and commitment by giving them the opportunity to access a range of exclusive rewards and benefits.
