Job description

EPSRC TWI-Sponsored PhD Scholarship in AI Models for Engineering (RS939)

Swansea University – Faculty of Science and Engineering

Swansea University is offering a fully funded EPSRC TWI-sponsored PhD scholarship focused on the development and application of artificial intelligence (AI) models within engineering contexts. This doctoral research opportunity is based within the Faculty of Science and Engineering and will be conducted in collaboration with The Welding Institute (TWI), a leading industrial research and technology organisation.

The project aims to advance AI-driven modelling approaches for engineering applications, with a particular focus on improving predictive capabilities, optimisation processes, and data-driven decision-making in industrial systems. The successful candidate will work at the interface of artificial intelligence, data science, and engineering, contributing to innovative research with direct industrial relevance. The role involves developing computational models, analysing complex datasets, and validating AI methodologies in collaboration with academic and industry partners.

The PhD programme provides access to state-of-the-art research facilities, expert supervision, and opportunities for professional development. The candidate will also benefit from close engagement with TWI, gaining exposure to real-world engineering challenges and industry practices.

The scholarship covers full tuition fees and includes a UKRI standard stipend. The position is offered on a full-time basis for a standard doctoral duration, subject to satisfactory academic progress.

Eligibility Criteria

  • A minimum of a 2:1 undergraduate degree (or equivalent) in Engineering, Computer Science, Data Science, Mathematics, or a closely related discipline
  • Candidates must meet UKRI eligibility requirements for funding (home and international applicants may be considered, subject to funding rules)

Required Expertise/Skills

  • Strong background in artificial intelligence, machine learning, or data science
  • Knowledge of engineering principles or interest in applying AI to engineering problems
  • Experience with programming languages such as Python or similar
  • Familiarity with data analysis, modelling, and computational methods
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and research skills
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to work collaboratively in interdisciplinary teams
