Job summary

MJ Church Contracting seeks an Environmental and Sustainability Advisor to support the company’s integrated management system and ISO 14001 compliance. You will coordinate sustainability data collection, deliver training, and provide guidance to project teams and subcontractors across England.

Qualifications

• Hold a degree in a relevant environmental discipline.
• Hold, or be working towards, professional membership of a relevant environmental body, such as ISEP or equivalent.
• CSCS card is required.
• Full UK Driving Licence is required.

Responsibilities

• Prepare, review and maintain Project Construction Environmental Management Plans reflecting current project requirements.
• Support site teams with environmental setup, constraint plans, inductions, inspections and action close-out.
• Ensure environmental permits, licences, exemptions and consents are identified and communicated.
• Oversee waste management arrangements including classification, storage, transfer documents and contractor compliance.
• Monitor resource use (electricity, fuel, materials, water) and support sustainability data reporting.
• Promote pollution prevention through storage, spill response, containment and refuelling control.
• Support protection of wildlife, trees, watercourses and other features on site.
• Notify Environmental and Sustainability Lead of regulator contacts, site visits or incidents.

The Role

We are seeking an Environmental and Sustainability Advisor. The role will support the continuous improvement of the Company’s integrated management system, ensuring compliance with ISO 14001 requirements, while contributing to the development of M J Church’s carbon management processes. Reporting to our Environmental and Sustainability Lead, you will undertake routine site inspections and environmental assessments across M J Church projects, working with project teams to identify practical prevention and control measures. You will also coordinate sustainability data collection, including carbon, waste and water usage, support accurate reporting, and deliver environmental training, toolbox talks and guidance to project teams and subcontractors.

Role and Responsibilities

• Prepare, review and maintain Project Construction Environmental Management Plans, ensuring site controls reflect current project requirements
• Support site teams with environmental set-up, constraints plans, inductions, inspections, monitoring and close-out of actions
• Ensure environmental permits, licences, exemptions and consents are identified, obtained and communicated where required
• Oversee waste management arrangements, including waste classification, storage, transfer documentation and contractor compliance
• Monitor resource use, including electricity, fuel, materials and water, and support sustainability data reporting across the business
• Promote pollution prevention through appropriate storage, spill response arrangements, secondary containment and refuelling control
• Support protection of wildlife, trees, watercourses and other sensitive environmental features on site
• Notify the Environmental and Sustainability Lead of any regulator contact, site visit or environmental incident without delay.

Qualification

• Hold a degree in a relevant environmental discipline
• Hold, or be working towards, professional membership of a relevant environmental body, such as ISEP or equivalent
• CSCS card
• Full UK Driving License

Experience

• Experience in environmental management within civil engineering, ideally highways
• Experience undertaking environmental inspections, audits and risk assessments
• Experience developing, reviewing and maintaining environmental management plans
• Experience in collecting, analysing and reporting sustainability performance data

  Skills

  • Ability to communicate environmental requirements and mitigations to project and site teams
  • Ability to work collaboratively with different stakeholders to achieve the best outcomes while considering time, cost, carbon and regulatory requirements
  • Strong ability to interpret data and analyse client documents, technical reports and regulatory requirements
  • Strong stakeholder management, presentation and report writing skills

  Knowledge

  • Practical knowledge of ISO 14001 environmental management systems
  • Strong knowledge of UK environmental legislation and regulatory compliance
  • Salary £35,000 - £45,000 per annum
