Job description
Summary

Are you passionate about the environment and looking for a role where you can make a real difference? We’re looking for a dedicated Environmental Performance Officer to help us protect and enhance our natural surroundings. In this role, you’ll be a key part of our Environmental Performance Team, ensuring that all our projects—from the initial design to the final construction—are managed in a way that minimises environmental impact. You’ll be a champion for good practice, promoting sustainable and responsible approaches across all our work.

Main Responsibilities
  • Conduct environmental desktop appraisals for new projects, offering expert advice from the design stage onwards.
  • Work with our project teams to identify ways to minimise environmental impact and find practical, innovative solutions.
  • Liaise with regulators and stakeholders to get necessary consents and advice, ensuring we’re always ahead of the curve.
  • Carry out site inspections and audits to make sure our work meets both regulations and our own high standards.
  • Help to roll out training programmes that upskill our teams and promote a culture of environmental responsibility.
  • Actively promote sustainability, circular economy, and environmental goals across the business.
  • Have the opportunity to mentor and manage apprentices and graduates within your team.
You’ll need:
  • A degree in an environmental subject or equivalent experience in a similar role.
  • Demonstrable experience managing environmental risks and finding pragmatic solutions that protect the environment.
  • A genuine passion for the environment and the ability to work collaboratively with a wide range of people, from colleagues and contractors to regulators and the public.
  • Experience in people management and building strong relationships with stakeholders.
  • Experience working in a process environment, especially with incident response.
It will be a bonus if you have:
  • Chartership or are working towards it with a professional body like CIWEM or CIEEM.
  • A specialist background, such as in archaeology, arboriculture, or as a protected species licence holder.
  • Experience with habitat restoration and management techniques, particularly in woodland, chalk grassland, and heathland habitats.
  • Knowledge of Biodiversity Net Gain.
  • Strong report writing and data presentation skills.

We want to be the water company people want to be supplied by and want to work for. We know the communities we serve are diverse. We recognise creativity comes from diversity, not similarity. That’s why we are enthusiastic about creating inclusion across age, race, gender, ethnicity, religion and identity. You will experience our dedication to equal opportunities and fair treatment for all: through your recruitment, employment and career progression with South East Water.

Benefits package
  • Excellent Stakeholder pension scheme, up to 10% employer contribution.
  • 5 weeks holiday plus bank holidays per annum, increasing to 6 weeks with length of service.
  • Flexible annual leave policy to buy or sell holiday leave.
  • Paid volunteering days.
  • Cycle to work scheme.
  • Health cash plan.
  • Life assurance.
  • Wellbeing related benefits.
What can you expect from your recruitment?
  • To apply for this position, please submit your CV on our career’s website.
  • It is necessary for you to have the legal right to work in the UK when you begin employment with South East Water.
