Job summary

Charlton Recruitment is recruiting on behalf of HS2 Ltd for an Environmental Manager to join the client team overseeing one of the most environmentally significant sections of the HS2 programme.

This role offers hybrid working with on-site requirements in Rickmansworth and surrounding locations, delivering environmental assurance across major civil works and handover.

Qualifications

  • Open to candidates from generalist or specialist environmental backgrounds.
  • Ability to apply environmental knowledge in complex construction environments.
  • Strong stakeholder relationships and collaborative problem-solving.

Responsibilities

  • Provide client side environmental assurance across the Align Main Works Civils Contract.
  • Ensure compliance with Environmental Minimum Requirements and legislation.
  • Review contractor environmental submissions and documentation.
  • Support technical assurance and stage gate approvals.
  • Monitor environmental mitigation during construction.
  • Support environmental handover of major assets.
  • Monitor landscape creation and ecological mitigation activities.
  • Challenge contractors to achieve environmental compliance and value for money.
  • Carry out environmental audits, reporting and performance monitoring.
  • Collaborate with environmental specialists across disciplines.

Environmental Manager Align JV

Location: Rickmansworth, Hertfordshire


Working Pattern: Hybrid working with typically 3 days on site or office 2 days home - can also work from Euston office (must be on site Rickmansworth 1 day a week)


Salary: £55,000 to £66,048 plus 12% Pension, Health + 25 Days


Programme: HS2, Align Joint Venture Main Works Civils Contract


Then you will move to one of the other contracts


Career Progression: Senior Environmental Manager £90,000 to £100,000 plus pkg


Help Deliver the Environmental Legacy of Britain's Largest Infrastructure Project


Charlton Recruitment is recruiting on behalf of HS2 Ltd for an Environmental Manager to join the client team overseeing one of the most environmentally significant sections of the HS2 programme.


This is an exciting opportunity to work across three of the most iconic engineering and environmental assets on the entire project.


You’ll support the successful delivery and long-term environmental legacy of:



  • Colne Valley Viaduct, the UK's longest railway bridge

  • The 16km Chiltern Twin Bored Tunnel, the longest tunnel on HS2

  • Colne Valley Western Slopes, the largest landscape and habitat creation scheme across the entire HS2 programme


Working within the Integrated Project Team alongside Align Joint Venture, you’ll provide environmental assurance throughout construction, technical handover and environmental restoration, ensuring environmental commitments are delivered safely, compliantly and to the highest standards.


We’re keen to hear from both Environmental Generalists and Environmental Specialists including Ecology, Air Quality, Noise, Carbon, Water, Landscape and Environmental Planning professionals who are looking to broaden their experience across a major infrastructure programme.


Strong communication and stakeholder management skills at essential, with the confidence to provide constructive challenge and work collaboratively with Tier 1 contractors to ensure environmental commitments are met, risks are appropriately managed and value for money is achieved.


The Role

Reporting to the Senior Environmental Manager, you’ll work across multiple environmental disciplines, supporting engineering teams, contractors and technical specialists to ensure environmental obligations are achieved throughout construction and into operational handover.


You’ll also play an important role in monitoring landscape establishment and ecological mitigation, helping create one of the UK's largest environmental legacies.


Key Responsibilities


  • Provide client side environmental assurance across the Align Main Works Civils Contract

  • Ensure compliance with Environmental Minimum Requirements and environmental legislation

  • Review contractor environmental submissions and technical documentation

  • Support technical assurance and project stage gate approvals

  • Monitor environmental mitigation throughout construction

  • Support the technical handover of major infrastructure assets

  • Monitor landscape creation and ecological mitigation activities

  • Challenge contractors to achieve environmental compliance and best practice

  • Support environmental audits, reporting and performance monitoring

  • Work collaboratively with technical specialists across multiple environmental disciplines

  • Identify environmental risks and support practical mitigation solutions

  • Build effective relationships with contractors, regulators and project stakeholders


About You

We’re open to candidates from a broad range of environmental backgrounds, including generalists and specialists in ecology, acoustics, air quality, carbon, contaminated land or other disciplines, from contractor, consultant, client or statutory authority backgrounds. What matters most is your ability to apply your environmental knowledge in a complex construction environment, ability to build strong stakeholder relationships and confidence to challenge and manage challenging stakeholders and work collaboratively to deliver environmental commitments. The client-side assurance and influencing aspects of the role will be developed and supported as you gain experience within the Integrated Project Team.
