Job description

Job Title: Environmental Health Technician

Reference: Exeter 5280266

Pay rate: £16.35 per hour PAYE

Role length: Anticipated 4-5 months

Additional requirements: Driving Licence

The role

We are looking for an Environmental Health Technician to investigate complaints and incidents relating to nuisance (e.g., drainage, noise, fly‑tipping, accumulation of refuse) and matters of anti‑social behaviour while providing support to victims and complainants. You will help develop preventative and diversionary measures in conjunction with partner agencies to reduce instances of nuisance and anti‑social behaviour and assist in providing an out‑of‑hours and emergency response capability for the service.

The role requires a qualified or experienced Environmental Health professional with experience of investigating nuisance and anti‑social behaviour complaints and knowledge of enforcement procedures as well as possessing excellent communication skills for handling complex or confrontational situations.

Key Responsibilities
  • Investigate complaints of nuisance and anti‑social behaviour from referral through to resolution, including advising and supporting complainants, witnesses and perpetrators, seeking informal resolution such as mediation, and taking legal action when appropriate.
  • Issue Fixed Penalty Notices to members of the public where an incident is in contravention of legislation.
  • Collaborate with other Council service areas, external agencies and partners to develop joint working responses to cases and emerging concerns.
  • Signpost complainants and perpetrators to appropriate support agencies when vulnerabilities are identified.
  • Promote good working relationships with partners such as the police, other council services, other local authorities, social landlords and the voluntary sector.
  • Prepare and enforce legal notices relating to nuisance and environmental crime; attend court proceedings when required.
  • Provide robust evidence when required to enable formal action, including taking witness statements, interviewing under caution, compiling case and prosecution files and attending court to give evidence.
  • Assist other sections of the service in dealing with outbreaks, environmental monitoring and emergency situations.
  • Regular out‑of‑hours work is required to investigate complaints.
