A leading environmental consultancy in Bangor, UK is seeking an Environmental Health Safety Scientist/Industrial Hygienist. The role involves providing environmental project support, conducting assessments, and ensuring compliance with safety regulations. Ideal candidates will have a minimum of a B.S. degree in Environmental Science and five years of relevant experience, along with OSHA certification. This position requires both independent work and collaboration in diverse environments.

Environmental Health Safety Scientist/Industrial Hygienist

The function of the EHS Scientist/Industrial Hygienist is to provide environmental project support for commercial, industrial, healthcare, State, municipal and educational clients on all aspects of Industrial Hygiene consultation, occupational safety and environmental regulatory compliance, health and safety compliance, and environmental assessment and remediation planning and oversight.

Typical work will include on-site evaluations and sampling/testing/monitoring for hazardous materials, occupational exposure, and Indoor Air Quality (IAQ), laboratory safety assessments, compliance auditing, planning, and reporting, for public and private sector clients including, but not limited to: Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), Maine Department of Environmental Protection (MDEP), U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), Resource Conservation Recovery Act (RCRA), Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA); Emergency Planning and Community Right-to-know Act (EPCRA), Spill Prevention Control and Countermeasure (SPCC), Department of Transportation (MDOT/DOT), as well as other applicable local, state and federal regulatory requirements.

Essential Functions

Responsibilities

  • Plans, conducts, and supports hazardous building materials assessments (e.g., asbestos, lead, polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs)
  • Conducts IAQ assessments and prepares assessment reports
  • Plans, conducts and supports OSHA compliance monitoring and Industrial Hygiene testing/monitoring.
  • Able to review, interpret and apply State-specific safety and environmental regulations (e.g., CES supports clients throughout the New England as well as nation-wide).
  • Understands federal and state occupational safety and environmental regulations and assist clients in understanding compliance obligations
  • Performs occupational safety and environmental compliance reviews/audits for a variety of clients, to determine compliance needs, and compliance status.
  • Reviews and evaluates compliance audit reports and assists in formulating and implementing appropriate responses.
  • Develop and implement (or assist in implementation) of environmental compliance programs for a wide range of public and private sector clients.
  • Provides laboratory safety technical support including but not limited to Chemical Hygiene Plan (CHP) management, laboratory safety and compliance auditing, laboratory construction/improvement project plan reviews, and biohazard/biosafety management.
  • Prepares technical reports, and reviews compliance with occupational and environmental regulations.
  • Promotes new business for the total company and for own area of expertise.
  • Works independently as well as a team member and is responsible for completion of assigned work in conformance with schedules in a fast-paced environment.

Job Qualifications

Minimum of B.S. degree in Environmental Science, Environmental Engineering, or related field.

Minimum of five years of experience preferred.

OSHA 40-hour HAZWOPER certification.

Certified Asbestos Inspector in Maine, or ability to become licensed in Maine

Recognized certification in health and safety (e.g., Certified Safety Professional (CSP), Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) preferred.

Experience or background in state and federal occupational safety and environmental regulations, and associated compliance support.

Working Conditions/Physical and Mental Requirements

Work is performed in a variety of indoor and outdoor environments, including institutional, commercial, and industrial sites. Outdoor work is subject to temperature extremes and inclement weather conditions. Work hours are subject to change with overtime work as needed. Work is also performed in an office setting.
