Job summary

Environmental Health Officer / Food Safety Officer

£45 per hour PAYE | Temporary Contract until March 2026

Sandwell Council House, Oldbury
37 hours per week (Mon-Fri) | Flexible Working | Evening & Weekend Work as Required

Overview of the Role

Residential Workers help to keep the public safe – and so do Environmental Health Officers. In this role, you will play a vital part in protecting local residents by ensuring food businesses across Sandwell meet statutory hygiene and food standards requirements. Working alongside a dedicated Food Safety Team, you will carry out official controls, support businesses in achieving compliance, and take enforcement action where necessary. It’s a rewarding professional role with real impact on community wellbeing.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Carry out food hygiene and food standards inspections in caterers and retailers across Category A‑D premises and unrated businesses
  • Undertake enforcement revisits to non‑compliant businesses and take escalation action when necessary
  • Investigate reactive food hygiene complaint work
  • Complete questionnaires for sporadic infectious disease notifications
  • Conduct skin piercing registration visits
  • Produce accurate records, inspection notes and reports
  • Work collaboratively with colleagues and partner agencies to improve compliance outcomes
Person Specification
  • Fully qualified Environmental Health Officer or Food Safety Officer, registered with the Environmental Health Registration Board
  • Minimum 2 years’ experience undertaking food hygiene and food standards inspections within a Local Authority
  • Competent in Food Safety and Food Standards in accordance with the Food Standards Agency Food Law Code of Practice
  • Evidence of 20 hours of CPD in Food Safety within the last 2 years
  • Able to carry out official controls in line with legislation, guidance and national codes of practice
  • Confident user of Microsoft Office and online systems
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to engage at all levels
  • Strong report-writing skills and attention to detail
Additional Information
  • Temporary post until the end of March 2026
  • 37 hours per week across Monday‑Friday
  • Some evening or weekend work may be required by the service
  • Office location: Sandwell Council House, Oldbury
  • Hourly rate: £45 per hour (PAYE)
  • Flexible working scheme in place
