Environmental Enforcement Officer
- Hourly Rate: £20.46 PAYE or £26.65

We are seeking an Environmental Enforcement Officer for a local authority in Sheffield, within the Environmental Regulation Service Area. This role is crucial for reducing environmental issues such as waste, litter, and fly-tipping, enhancing community well-being and compliance with environmental laws.
Day-to-day of the role:
- Respond to complaints and service requests related to environmental concerns.
- Proactively identify and investigate environmental problems.
- Manage criminal case files, conduct PACE interviews, and prepare cases for prosecution.
- Issue statutory Notices and Fixed Penalty Notices.
- Educate residents and businesses on environmental responsibilities.
- Collaborate with the police, council departments, and community representatives to find practical solutions.
- Support other council officers in their duties and ensure services align with council policies and equality charter.
Main Responsibilities:
- Environmental Enforcement & Investigations: Act as a knowledge source and enforce legislation, including inspections, preparing reports, and supporting legal proceedings.
- Notices & Remedial Work: Arrange and monitor remedial works as required by Notices.
- Commercial Waste & Duty of Care: Monitor and investigate commercial waste management, ensuring compliance with relevant legislation.
- Litter & Street-Based Enforcement: Address littering issues using appropriate legislation and issue Fixed Penalty Notices.
- Police & Multi-Agency Operations: Participate in operations with the police and other agencies to enforce environmental laws.
- CCTV, Surveillance & Environmental Monitoring: Manage CCTV operations and conduct environmental surveys.
- Bins & Neighbourhood Environmental Issues: Encourage compliance with local regulations regarding public bin usage.
- Public, Councillor & Stakeholder Engagement: Engage with the public, councillors, and stakeholders, providing updates and consultations.
- Emergency & Public Health Response: Respond to emergencies related to public health protection.
- IT, Reporting & Performance: Utilize IT tools to meet performance targets and contribute to service efficiency.
Required Skills & Qualifications:
- Strong communication skills and the ability to interact effectively with various stakeholders.
- Experience in managing multiple case files and working under pressure.
- Knowledge of environmental legislation and ability to interpret legal documents.
- Computer literacy, preferably with Microsoft Office experience.
- A current full driving licence.
- Experience in environmental health, trading standards, or related fields.
- Training in PACE or similar criminal investigation procedures.
