Job summary

Aberdeen City Council is seeking an Environmental Operations operative to perform gardening, street sweeping and horticultural tasks across parks, playing fields, cemeteries and other spaces in Aberdeen.

You will operate a variety of vehicles and work within Environmental Services, communicating effectively and prioritising workloads to meet deadlines with minimal supervision.

Qualifications

• Must have a Full Class B UK driving licence.
• Experience with Environmental Services teams and practices.
• Willingness to use HR platforms (CoreHr).
• Good oral and written communication.
• Ability to organise and prioritise workloads.

Responsibilities

• Carry out general gardening, street sweeping and horticultural tasks in public parks and open spaces.
• Work as part of a team across parks, playing fields, cemeteries and housing estates.
• Operate a range of vehicles including 3.5 tonne tipper trucks and ride-on equipment.
• Prioritise workloads, meet deadlines and work with limited supervision.

Job Purpose:

Duration: Permanent, Full Time

Roles that require PVG Membership

Please note that with effect from 1 April 2023, where a role requires PVG membership, candidates will be required to meet the cost of the PVG membership. This applies only to roles with a full time equivalent salary of £30,000 and above. (Teaching roles and jobs at Grade 10 and above (currently £30,030 per annum / £16.50 per hour))

The Council will pay for the PVG membership cost initially, either £18 for existing PVG scheme members, or £59 for non-members, and this cost will be deducted from an employee’s first FULL month’s salary payment.

Job purpose/about the role

The postholder undertake either individually or as a member of a team a variety of duties concerned with Environmental Operations including both general gardening or street sweeping work and horticultural work of a specialist nature in public parks, playing fields, cemeteries, landscaped areas, public open spaces, public roads, amenity areas and housing estates.

The post holder needs to hold as a minimum:

• Must have a Full Class B UK driving licence

The postholder is able to demonstrate:

• Driving a wide range of vehicles, including 3.5 tonne tipper trucks, Ride on grass cutting vehicles, small mechanical sweepers
• A working knowledge and experience of Environmental Services teams and practices.
• The willingness to use The Councils digital platforms in relation to HR (CoreHr)
• The ability to communicate effectively in both oral and written forms
• The ability to organise and prioritise workloads to deal with simultaneous demands and to achieve deadlines.
• The ability to work proactively and with limited direct supervision, while at the same time recognising when matters need to be referred to the Line Manager
