Job summary

Astute is seeking an Environmental Compliance Manager to join its nuclear team on the Sizewell C project. The role focuses on ensuring environmental compliance across water abstraction, sampling and regulatory reporting, with a competitive package including pension and bonus.

Qualifications

  • Undergraduate degree or equivalent in a scientific subject.
  • Experience in water industry, environmental management, geology, chemistry or related discipline.
  • Experience with laboratory techniques, equipment and maintenance advantageous.
  • Strong knowledge of Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Working knowledge of COSHH and Health and Safety requirements.
  • Knowledge of laboratory quality control and quality management principles.
  • Understanding of environmental permitting, water abstraction or regulatory compliance beneficial.
  • Experience handling scientific, environmental or water quality data.

Responsibilities

  • Manage compliance with Sizewell C abstraction licence including flow and water usage.
  • Oversee daily/monthly sampling across abstraction points (water quality, bathing water, cement grade).
  • Check Leiston drain crossing and Aldhurst Farm weir on schedule.
  • Record and transfer data to Water Abstraction Tracker for EA submission.
  • Monitor site discharge quality to ensure regulatory compliance.
  • Ensure compliance for generators at Sizewell C per Industrial Emissions Directive.
  • Liaise with Sizewell C client and Environment Agency on inspections and actions.
  • Capture and report groundwater, surface water and dewatering data to demonstrate compliance.

Astute's Nuclear team are partnering with a leading utilities and infrastructure services provider, recognised for its technical excellence and commitment to sustainability, to recruit an Environmental Compliance Manager to work on the Sizewell C project.

The strategically important Environmental Compliance Manager role comes with a competitive salary, up to 20% combined pension contribution, performance-related bonus and many additional benefits.

Responsibilities and duties of the Environmental Compliance Manager role

Reporting to the relevant site management team, you will:

  • Manage compliance with the Sizewell C abstraction licence, including abstracted flow, water usage and 'hands-off' flow conditions.
  • Ensure accurate and timely daily and monthly sampling across abstraction points, including water quality, bathing water quality and cement grade quality samples.
  • Ensure required checks of the Leiston drain crossing and Aldhurst Farm weir are completed accurately and at the required frequency.
  • Monitor and maintain accurate abstraction data, including transferring daily sample information to the Water Abstraction Tracker for submission to the Environment Agency.
  • Monitor site discharge quality to ensure environmental compliance, protect public safety and minimise the risk of regulatory breaches.
  • Manage compliance and assurance requirements for generators operating at Sizewell C in accordance with the Industrial Emissions Directive.
  • Liaise with the Sizewell C client and Environment Agency regarding site inspections, recommendations and follow-up actions.
  • Capture, analyse and report groundwater, surface water and dewatering data to demonstrate compliance with UK environmental regulations.
  • Critically evaluate scientific data and accurately report results within agreed contractual and regulatory timescales.
  • Maintain accurate records and work within the Quality Policy and ISO 17025 requirements to support UKAS accreditation.
  • Raise and manage Insights relating to data or compliance issues, working with operational teams to investigate and close out actions.
  • Liaise with laboratories and third-party contractors regarding results, certificates and investigations.
  • Undertake telemetry data downloads and process raw groundwater and surface water data.
  • Review and update sampling procedures, water and sediment management plans and internal scientific analyst guides.
  • Lead on Permit to Pump authorisation and registration to ensure water quality requirements are maintained.
  • Produce monthly, quarterly and annual reports for the client, meeting all contractual deadlines.
  • Work closely with Environmental Technicians and Process Technicians to ensure asset management checks and maintenance activities are completed.
  • Conduct analysis of groundwater data and surface water sample results.
Professional qualifications

We are looking for someone with the following:

  • Undergraduate degree or equivalent qualification in a scientific subject.
  • Experience relevant to the water industry, environmental management, geology, chemistry or a related discipline.
  • Experience with laboratory techniques, equipment and maintenance would be advantageous.
  • Strong knowledge of Microsoft Office, particularly Word, Excel and PowerPoint.
  • Working knowledge of COSHH and Health and Safety requirements.
  • Working knowledge of laboratory quality control and the principles of quality management.
  • Understanding of environmental permitting, water abstraction or regulatory compliance would be advantageous.
  • Experience working with scientific, environmental or water quality data would be beneficial.
