Job description
Overview

To deliver high-quality, engaging English lessons that develop students literacy, communication, and critical thinking skills. The English Teacher will inspire a love of reading, writing, and language while ensuring students of all abilities achieve their potential. They will also contribute to the wider life of the school through enrichment activities and whole-school literacy initiatives.

Responsibilities
  • Plan and deliver English lessons across KS3 and KS4 (and KS5 if applicable), in line with the National Curriculum and exam specifications.
  • Use a variety of teaching strategies to engage, challenge, and inspire students.
  • Differentiate lessons to meet the needs of all learners, including SEN and EAL students.
  • Assess, record, and report on student progress, providing clear and constructive feedback.
  • Promote a culture of reading for pleasure and appreciation of literature.
  • Contribute to the design and development of schemes of work, assessments, and resources in English Language and Literature.
  • Prepare pupils for internal and external assessments (GCSE, A-Level, or equivalent).
  • Ensure lessons are inclusive, stretching the most able while supporting those who need additional help.
  • Create and maintain a positive, safe, and stimulating learning environment.
  • Uphold high standards of behaviour in line with school policies.
  • Encourage resilience, creativity, and independent thinking in all learners.
  • Support extracurricular English activities such as book clubs, creative writing workshops, or drama productions.
  • Lead or contribute to literacy initiatives across the school.
  • Provide additional support for exam preparation and targeted interventions.
  • Engage in professional development and remain up to date with developments in English education.
  • Attend staff meetings, parents evenings, and contribute to the wider school community.
  • Carry out additional duties as reasonably directed by the Headteacher.
