Job summary

Avara Foods is seeking an Engineering Shift Manager for our Brackley, Northamptonshire site. You will lead the day-to-day engineering shift, coordinate maintenance, and ensure a safe working environment across a fast-paced FMCG facility.

The role combines factory and office duties on a 4 on 4 off cycle (07:00–19:00 / 19:00–07:00). You’ll develop your team, drive performance improvements, and ensure GMP compliance while delivering reliable plant availability.

Qualifications

  • Minimum HNC certification or Advanced Apprenticeship in Engineering.
  • Proven experience leading engineering teams in manufacturing.
  • Familiar with process machinery and fault finding.
  • Self-motivated, able to multi-task in a timeline-driven environment.
  • Strong leadership and decision-making under time pressure.
  • Desirable NEBOSH or IOSH.
  • Desirable IEE 17th/18th Edition.
  • Desirable PLC and refrigeration experience.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and manage day-to-day running of the Engineering Shift to support activities on site.
  • Manage welfare, training and development of the Shift Engineers.
  • Record hours and overtime for the shift.
  • Oversee on-shift engineering performance of production lines and maintenance.
  • Ensure safe plant operations and adherence to maintenance procedures.
  • Coordinate with REACT store, Engineering Planner and Engineering Ops Manager.
  • Control and manage tools allocated to the shift.
  • Maintain workshop and outside areas to GMP standards and address audits.
  • Identify training needs and develop Personal Development Plans.
  • Review equipment data, PMs and weekend/daily planning.
  • Lead improvement projects and produce the Engineering Shift Report.
  • Issue permits through SINICA and Contractor Management on-site.

A fast-paced, dynamic FMCG factory environment which is noisy and refrigerated in some areas, manufacturing short shelf life products where hygiene standards are critical.

The role is both factory and office based, working 4 on 4 off (rotating days and nights). 07:00 – 19:00 and 19:00 – 07:00.
What will you be doing as an Engineering Shift Manager at Avara?

As an Engineering Shift Manager, you will lead and manage the day to day running of the Engineering Shift in order to support all activities on site by assessing all aspects of maintenance procedures, ensuring a safe working environment at all times. Responsible for the management, welfare, training and development of the relevant Shift Engineers.

What will your key responsibilities as an Engineering Shift Manager include?
  • Leading and managing a Shift of Engineers and Apprentices, including recording all necessary administrative requirements for basic and overtime hours.
  • Responsibility for on-shift engineering performance of fast-moving production lines and wider factory engineering activities with due consideration for safe plant operations. Assessing all aspects of maintenance procedures, ensuring a safe working environment at all times.
  • Ensuring correct set up and shut down of equipment and performance at the required output.
  • Ensuring that delivery of agreed SLA standards is maintained where appropriate.
  • Accountability for allocating and recording stock used in support of machinery. Includes requesting of replacement parts and sourcing of additional parts as required; this requires close liaison with the REACT store man, Engineering Planner and Engineering Operations Manager
  • Responsibility for control and management of tools allocated to the shift.
  • Maintaining the Workshop and outside areas to high standard, ensuring regular checks are conducted and satisfactory feedback is received from GMP audits.
  • Ensuring the training and development needs of your team are identified and addressed through regular 1-2-1s, agreeing Personal Development Plans and formally recording meetings.
  • Reviewing data on equipment effectiveness, PMs and coordinating the inclusion of jobs on weekend or daily plans.
  • Leading and supporting improvement projects and initiatives.
  • Production of Engineering Shift Report.
  • Issuing of permits through SINICA and Contractor Management while on-site.
What you’ll need to be successful:
  • Minimum HNC certification or Advanced Apprenticeship in Engineering.
  • Proven experience leading Engineering teams within a manufacturing environment.
  • Must be familiar with process machinery or equivalent equipment and have the ability to fault find.
  • Self-motivated attitude with the ability to multi-task and thrive in a timeline-driven environment.
  • Interpersonal communication skills.
  • Strong leadership skills and the ability to make effective decisions under time pressure, you will have the ability to motivate a team to deliver consistently high performance.
  • Ability to demonstrate a good understanding of maintenance strategy as well as practical hands-on engineering experience.
  • Desirable NEBOSH or IOSH.
  • Desirable IEE 17th or 18th Edition.
  • Instrumentation and process control experience.
  • Desirable PLC experience.
  • Desirable refrigeration experience.
