Job summary

PerkinElmer is seeking an Engineering Manager, R&D — Material Characterization in High Wycombe, UK. You will lead a multidisciplinary team spanning mechanical, optical, electronics, software and firmware to deliver high-precision instrumentation for IR, UV-Vis and Thermal analysis.

Reporting to the Director of R&D, you will drive project delivery, implement design for excellence, collaborate with Product Management, Quality and Supply Chain, and develop talent in a fast-paced industrial research

Qualifications

  • Significant experience leading multidisciplinary R&D engineering teams in industrial settings.
  • Track record from concept through launch in high-precision instrumentation.
  • Degree in Engineering or Physics; MSc/PhD preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Lead, coach and develop a multidisciplinary team across mechanical, optical, electronics, software and firmware; manage resource planning and allocation; recruit, retain and grow talent; set objectives and maintain a culture of accountability and continuous improvement.
  • Deliver projects to scope, schedule, cost and quality; manage phase-gate and design-review processes; document and risk-assess detailed design decisions; track progress and report to the Director of R&D and stakeholders; remove blockers and manage cross-disciplinary dependencies.
  • Embed manufacturability, serviceability, reliability, quality, cost, sustainability and usability; champion modular, reusable design; develop and maintain engineering processes, standards and tools; support value engineering and cost improvements without compromising outcomes.
  • Work with Product Management, Science, Systems Engineering, Operations, Quality, Service and Supply Chain to deliver commercially and operationally successful products; translate customer and business needs into plans and priorities; support manufacturing transfer and supplier qualification.
  • Ensure compliance with quality, regulatory and product development requirements; capture learnings across development, launch, production and field; promote IP generation and protection.
  • Understand current projects, priorities and roadmap; build relationships with the team and stakeholders; assess capability, workload and succession risk; prioritize development and hiring; review practices and establish a clear reporting rhythm.

Overview

Engineering Manager, R&D — Material Characterization, PerkinElmer | High Wycombe, UK. Reports to: Director, R&D — Material Characterization. Scope includes leadership of the multidisciplinary Material Characterization R&D engineering team (mechanical, optical, electronics, software and firmware) developing IR, UV-Vis and Thermal Analysis instruments.

  6. First 90 days: Understand current projects, priorities and roadmap; build relationships with the team and stakeholders; assess capability, workload and succession risk; prioritize development and hiring; review practices and establish a clear reporting rhythm.
Qualifications and experience
  • Essential: Degree in Engineering, Physics or related technical discipline; significant experience developing complex, high-precision optical, electro-mechanical or scientific instrumentation in an industrial R&D environment; proven line management or multidisciplinary engineering leadership; track record from concept through launch and sustaining support within a structured product development framework; strong planning, communication and stakeholder-management skills.
  • Preferred: Advanced degree (MSc, PhD) or equivalent experience; domain knowledge of optical, spectroscopic or thermal-analysis instrumentation; experience with optical-bench design, detectors and sources, precision mechanisms, embedded control, thermal management and signal processing; experience with modular architecture, platform development and Design for Excellence methodologies; familiarity with hybrid Agile and phase-gate delivery models and modern engineering toolchains; experience working across sites and suppliers in a global, matrixed organisation.
