Engineering Manager

My client is a leading UK manufacturer of a range of PVCU Fenestration Products. They are looking for an experienced Engineering Manager to join their team, the role has responsibility for a team of six, comprising one Engineering Team Leader, three Engineers and two Apprentice Engineers.

Working Hours & Team Structure

Our factory operates two shifts, Monday to Friday:

  • 6:00am - 2:00pm

  • 2:15pm - 10:15pm

Our Engineering team currently rotates between these shifts on a weekly basis. However, the Engineering Manager typically works 8:30am - 5:00pm, Monday to Friday, with some flexibility required to support operational needs.

Role Overview

The Engineering Manager is responsible for leading and managing the Engineering function to ensure the effective delivery of planned and reactive maintenance activities, maximising equipment reliability, minimising downtime and supporting the achievement of operational and business KPIs. Working collaboratively with Production and other key departments, the role will oversee the delivery of the Planned Preventative Maintenance (PPM) programme, ensure the effective management of engineering resources, spare parts and maintenance priorities, and drive improvements in Total Productive Maintenance (TPM) and Front-Line Maintenance (FLM) activities. The role will provide leadership, direction and development to the Engineering team, promoting a proactive and preventative approach to maintenance. A key focus will be driving continuous improvement in engineering performance, improving Mean Time to Failure (MTTF), reducing equipment downtime, optimising maintenance costs and delivering agreed improvement plans. The Engineering Manager will ensure all engineering activities are undertaken in accordance with Health & Safety legislation, environmental requirements and company policies, whilst fostering a culture of accountability, operational excellence and continuous improvement across the business.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement an engineering strategy for the site that supports the achievement of business objectives, embedding a proactive, safety-first culture.

  • Develop and maintain an engineering scorecard, monitoring performance against agreed KPIs and implementing corrective actions where targets are not achieved, including robust reporting and analysis of major breakdowns.

  • Prepare and manage engineering budgets, monitoring expenditure against agreed targets and identifying opportunities for cost efficiencies and continuous improvement.

  • Develop project specifications, undertake value stream mapping across the site and maintain a comprehensive asset register to support effective maintenance and investment planning.

  • Prepare and present capital expenditure (CAPEX) business cases, identifying investment opportunities, evaluating costs and benefits and demonstrating return on investment.

  • Lead and deliver engineering projects, including large-scale capital investment programmes, from initial concept through to commissioning, ensuring delivery on time, within budget and to agreed specifications.

  • Manage external contractors, suppliers and key stakeholders throughout engineering projects, ensuring effective communication, risk management and minimal disruption to operations.

  • Lead, coach and develop the Engineering team, ensuring robust succession planning through apprenticeships, training and skills development aligned with departmental skills matrices.

  • Champion Lean thinking and continuous improvement, driving a cultural shift towards waste reduction, operational efficiency and sustainable improvements in engineering performance.

  • Apply Lean manufacturing principles and methodologies, including 5S, Kaizen, root cause analysis and Total Productive Maintenance (TPM), to improve equipment reliability, reduce downtime and optimise productivity.

  • Ensure robust processes and compliance arrangements are in place for contractor management, Lock Out Tag Out (LOTO) and Safe Systems of Work (SSOW).

  • Oversee facilities management across the site, ensuring buildings, infrastructure and associated services are maintained to appropriate operational, safety and compliance standards

Skills & Experience

  • Significant engineering management experience in a manufacturing environment, ideally within fenestration.

  • Holds relevant engineering qualification(s), ideally a member of a relevant professional body with a strong interest in continuous learning

  • Resilient, experienced manager with experience of developing and delivering an engineering strategy and key engineering measures.

  • Can demonstrate a customer focused approach, building collaboration between teams.

  • Well organised, disciplined, and self-motivated, with the capability to balance multiple priorities and flex their approach accordingly.

  • Analytical, strategic-thinker and planner, with a 'hands on' strong leadership style, leading by example.
