Engineering Deputy Shift Manager

Location: Kingsway, Rochdale
Salary: Up to £57,000 (DOE)
Shift Pattern: Continental Shifts - 4 on, 4 off (Days & Nights)

Role Overview

As Engineering Deputy Shift Manager, you'll support the Engineering Shift Manager in leading and developing a team of multi-skilled engineers and support staff. This is an ideal opportunity for an experienced Shift Engineer or Team Leader ready to take the next step into management. You'll play a key role in driving maintenance performance, learning leadership fundamentals, and building a proactive engineering culture across two large-scale sites.

Key Responsibilities

• Support the Shift Manager in leading and developing a team of multi-disciplined Engineers and Assistants.
• Take on leadership responsibility in the absence of the Shift Manager, gaining valuable management experience.
• Contribute to a culture of continuous improvement across performance, people, and process.
• Deliver hands‑on technical support, assisting with fault‑finding, planned maintenance, and project work as required.
• Manage day‑to‑day contractor activities and ensure SLA targets are met.
• Get involved in people development through mentoring, training, and structured one‑to‑ones.
• Promote best practise in Health & Safety, ensuring compliance with company and statutory standards.
• Collaborate cross‑functionally with Operations, HR, H&S and Planning to ensure equipment uptime and resource efficiency.
• Support proactive maintenance planning through effective CMMS management and scheduling.
• Lead and support CI projects aimed at reducing downtime and improving asset reliability.

About You

• Time‑served Shift Engineer or Team Leader looking to progress into management.
• Experience in automated warehouse, logistics or FMCG environments.
• Qualified to HNC or equivalent in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering.
• Confident in PLC/SCADA fault finding (Siemens preferred).
• Proficient in CMMS systems (Agility experience advantageous).
• Driven, curious, and proactive – keen to lead, learn and make an impact.
• Excellent communicator with sound decision‑making skills.
• Health & Safety conscious (IOSH or equivalent desirable).
• Thrives in a fast‑paced, high‑performance environment with changing priorities.
