Job summary

Trainline is hiring for a Platform Engineer to join the Atlas team in a hybrid role based in London. You will help build and run Trainline’s infrastructure, focusing on reliability, automation, and secure delivery.

The role collaborates with Senior Platform Engineers and Tech Leads to deliver high-quality platform improvements. We attend to least-privilege access, CI/CD pipelines, and cross-functional collaboration in an agile setup.

Qualifications

• Experience with AWS services such as ECS, Lambda, IAM or CloudFront.
• Experience delivering infrastructure changes using Terraform.
• Ability to work with minimal supervision and raise risks when needed.
• Experience using Node.js or Python for automation or scripting.

Introducing the Infrastructure Engineering and Tooling team aka Atlas at Trainline

The Infrastructure Engineering and Tooling team, also known as Atlas, owns the ecosystem used to deploy, run and manage traffic across the Trainline platform. The team is currently building the next version of Trainline’s infrastructure platform, with a focus on reliability, quality, automation and secure, scalable delivery.

You will join a collaborative team made up of software engineers, DevOps engineers and platform engineers across a range of experience levels. The team works across technologies including Terraform, AWS, Node.js, C# and Python, but we do not expect you to know everything from day one. In this role, you will work closely with a Senior Platform Engineer, Tech Lead, Delivery Manager and wider engineering stakeholders to deliver high-quality infrastructure improvements that make our platform easier and safer to operate.

In this role as the Platform Engineer, you will...

• Deliver improvements to Trainline’s engineering platforms, contributing to infrastructure that helps teams deploy, run and manage services reliably.

• Implement infrastructure changes using Terraform, following existing module patterns and working with others to ensure changes are clear, consistent and maintainable.

• Apply least-privilege and secure-by-default principles across AWS accounts, helping us maintain a secure and reliable platform environment.

• Contribute to automation scripts or tooling using Node.js or Python, supporting repeatable delivery and reducing manual effort for engineering teams.

• Collaborate closely with Senior Platform Engineers, Tech Leads and Delivery Managers to understand priorities, clarify requirements and deliver agreed milestones.

• Test, validate and deploy changes through CI/CD pipelines, taking care to ensure work is well checked before it reaches production.

• Provide clear delivery updates, raise blockers early and ask for support when needed so the team can stay aligned and move forward effectively.

• Build your knowledge of Trainline’s platform and engineering practices, using feedback and collaboration to continuously improve the quality of your work.

We'd love to hear from you if you have...

• Good experience working with AWS services such as ECS, Lambda, IAM or CloudFront, with an understanding of cloud operational and security best practice.

• Experience delivering infrastructure changes using Terraform, with an interest in writing clear, reusable and reliable infrastructure code.

• The ability to deliver defined tasks with minimal supervision, while knowing when to ask questions, share progress or raise risks.

• Experience using Node.js or Python for automation, scripting or integration tasks, or transferable experience with similar programming languages.

• A thoughtful approach to secure engineering, including least-privilege access and secure-by-default infrastructure practices.

• Experience using AI tooling to support day-to-day work, such as coding, research, code review or improving productivity.

• A collaborative working style, with the ability to contribute effectively in agile, delivery-focused teams.

• Helpful experience with Git-based CI/CD pipelines, multi-account AWS environments, CDN, WAF or service-to-service authentication approaches such as OIDC.
