Job summary

Sweco UK Ltd in Manchester is recruiting an Engineer to join the Highways team. The role covers design and development through all stages from inception to construction, with exposure to client side and design-build environments on public and private projects.

You will work on road geometry, drainage, pavement, road restraint systems, and traffic signs with support from senior engineers. Bentley OpenRoads/Civils 3D and AutoCAD experience highly valued.

Qualifications

  • Degree in civil/highways engineering or equivalent.
  • Experience delivering highway projects or work packages on multi-disciplinary projects.
  • Experience with highway geometry design per DMRB; desirable knowledge of MfS.

Responsibilities

  • Undertake highway design elements from geometry to drainage and traffic signs with guidance from senior team members.
  • Produce design outputs: drawings, specifications, schedules, reports and calculations.
  • Collaborate with other design disciplines and stakeholders to meet client needs and project timescales.
  • Ensure work complies with IMS and H&S legislation.
  • Take ownership of quality and pursue professional development through training and institution activities.

These roles can be worked flexibly, with a minimum of 3 days in the office and the option of adjusted start and finish times.

Our highway and transportation engineering teams are recognised industry leaders and operate across several markets including strategic roads, urban city/town centre interventions and private developments. We have a strong portfolio of local and national clients, some of our recent projects across the North West and West Yorkshire include Northern Gateway Western Access, A62 Oldham Road, A662 Ashton New Road, Picadilly Bus Interchange, York Central, Bradford City Centre, Bradford Kings Road and Wakefield Road corridors, A641 in Brighouse and Connecting North East Calderdale.

We use the latest design software and techniques to produce innovative and efficient design solutions for our clients with safety and sustainability at the forefront of our minds.

What does the role involve?

Working with Sweco will give you the opportunity to work on landmark projects and schemes of all shapes and sizes. You will also learn from people who share a passion for working together with our customers to deliver technical excellence.

Working as an Engineer in the Highways teams we'll offer you exposure to varied project work working within all projects stages from inception through to construction and handover, both operating client side and in a design and build environment working on publicly funded and private developer projects.

You will undertake engineering design and development through the application of proven techniques and procedures to develop appropriate solutions to client problems including:

  • Undertaking elements of design from road geometry, drainage, and pavement to road restraint systems and traffic signs and road markings with support from senior members of the project team.
  • Producing design outputs such as drawings, specifications, schedules, reports and calculations etc, to achieve the optimum solution for the project.
  • Working in close collaboration with your team and other design disciplines and have an appreciation of their role.
  • Ensuring deliverables are carried out within agreed timescales and budgets.
  • Ensuring that solutions meet client needs and expectations are met/exceeded.
  • Ensuring that all work is carried out to the Company’s IMS, and current H&S legislation requirements.

You will take ownership and responsibility for the quality of work you produce and be fully committed to your professional development through a mix of our in-house training opportunities and engaging with professional institution activities.

To be successful in this role you’ll possess:
  • A relevant degree and be working towards achieving a relevant professional qualification.
  • Experience of the planning and delivery of elements of highway projects or work packages on larger multi-disciplinary projects.
  • Experience of undertaking highway geometry design in accordance with the DMRB, and desirably Manual for Streets, using Bentley OpenRoads or Civils 3D software or similar software packages.
  • Experience of highway ancillary works design and MCHW specification production would be an advantage but not essential.
  • Strong experience of AutoCAD and a sound understanding of its integration with the BIM environment.
  • The confidence to present design solutions and progress both internally and externally to clients and stakeholders.
  • A desire to learn, progress and challenge yourself.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
