Job Purpose

The Gas Meter Lab is responsible for testing, maintaining, and ensuring the availability of equipment and materials necessary for the distribution of natural gas. This position ensures compliance with applicable state and federal codes while supporting operational efficiency.

Key Accountabilities
  • Establish and adhere to procedures for condition monitoring, inspection, predictive/preventative maintenance, and corrective maintenance of Gas Meter Lab equipment and materials.
  • Lead and participate in testing and compliance monitoring in coordination with the New York State Public Service Commission (PSC), ensuring adherence to state and federal regulations.
  • Collaborate with Asset Engineering to verify that materials meet company standards, are fit-for- purpose, and comply with federal and state codes.
  • Review and approve designs, determine equipment sizing, and select appropriate equipment for customer service upgrades.
  • Partner with National Grid functional leaders to share best practices and promote consistency in asset management and engineering for gas distribution.
  • Manage relationships with vendors and manufacturers, coordinating equipment ordering, scheduling, part replacement, non-stock materials, and refurbishment.
  • Assist in developing procedures and plans for the evolving operations of the Gas Meter Lab.
  • Develop and deploy strategies to monitor network health and device registration within the Meter Lab.
  • Support Meter Lab personnel through upskilling, equipment training, and knowledge-sharing initiatives.
  • Ensure successful execution of the Advanced Metering Infrastructure plan, maintaining adequate quantities of passing modules for deployment.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree from an ABET-accredited institution, focusing on an engineering discipline or science.
  • Preferred two (2) years’ experience in an engineering/technical role.
  • Ability to perform routine engineering work requiring the application of standard engineering techniques and procedures with moderate oversight.
  • Awareness of relevant state and federal codes, practices and standards.
  • Basic understanding of financial terms, tracking and analysis; familiarity with SAP, Command Center, Tesco Meter Manager, MITS preferred.
  • Ability to develop relationships with internal and external stakeholders to obtain and share information.
  • Awareness of the issues impacting the energy industry sector.
  • Ability to identify opportunities to improve department processes and products.
  • Familiarity with Microsoft Office Suite, Power Platform, and SharePoint.
  • Valid driver’s license with a safe driving history that meets National Grid’s Safe Driver policy (e.g., must not have more than one traffic violation in the last year and/or more than one motor vehicle accident within the past three years.) required.

Salary: $92,000.00 - $108,000.00 USD
