We are looking for an Energy & Sustainability Engineer to support the delivery of sustainable building solutions, supporting the UK Properties & Buildings business delivering sustainability and Net Zero strategies, WELL, LEED, Ska Certifications, Lifecycle Assessment and Circular Economy advice.

  • The Building Services team in the Northern Region (Split across Newcastle, Manchester, Leeds, Edinburgh and Glasgow) consists of more than 50 mechanical, electrical, and public health engineers.

A little more about your role…
  • Interpret and apply current and emerging UK sustainability legislation and guidance (e.g. Building Regulations, local planning policies, Net Zero policies).
  • Develop and deliver energy strategies aligned with project goals and client expectations.
  • Ensure accuracy, quality, and timeliness of sustainability deliverables.
  • Commitment to our culture of continuous improvement.
  • Stay current with industry trends, software developments, and best practices in energy modelling.
RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Collaborate with clients and design teams to produce accurate reports and identify opportunities to enhance building energy performance.
  • Conduct dynamic thermal modelling (IES VE), including:
    • Part L compliance
    • Thermal Comfort analysis (TM52/TM59)
    • Operational energy (CIBSE TM54)
    • Daylight studies
  • Prepare Energy & Sustainability Statements to support planning submissions, coordinating input from multidisciplinary teams. This will include coordination and managing energy / sustainability contributions from different stakeholders.
  • Attend site visits and surveys as required.
  • Undertake steady-state heating and cooling load assessments.
  • Prepare reports and presentations on modelling results and design solutions.
  • Contribute to BREEAM, WELL, LEED, NABERS, and other sustainability certifications.
  • Contribute to Whole Life Carbon assessments and Lifecycle Analysis.
KEY COMPETENCIES AND EXPERIENCE
  • An understanding of UK building regulations (Part L/Section 6, and Part O).
  • An understanding of industry guidance documents including CIBSE, TM52, TM59, etc.
  • Can demonstrate a knowledge for low‑carbon, energy‑efficient design; background in Building Physics and passive design.
  • Experience in dynamic thermal modelling (ideally using IES VE and/or Grasshopper/Ladybug).
  • Strong analytical, data interpretation, and problem‑solving skills.
  • Have an ability to report, present and communicate technical detail graphically and effectively.
  • Experience with Part L and/or Section 6 compliance for domestic and non‑domestic buildings.
QUALIFICATIONS
  • Degree in Mechanical, Building Services, or Sustainability Engineering.
  • Membership of a related professional institution and on the way or already “chartered” either engineer, scientist or environmentalist.
