Job summary

NESO is seeking an economist/analyst to lead market modelling using PLEXOS, develop robust methodologies, and automate analysis with Python.

You will ensure data quality, engage stakeholders, and deliver clear insights for cost-benefit analyses and the Centralised Strategic Network Plan (CSNP).

Experience in energy economics and data science, with strong Excel and SQL/VBA skills, is essential for this role.

Qualifications

• Career experience in economics, data science or analysis.
• Existing experience within the energy industry and understanding of the supply, transportation and use of energy may be advantageous
• Degree in economics, a STEM subject or other relevant experience in a numerate discipline
• Logical, creative and practical approach to problem solving
• Ability to break down complex problems
• Confidence using large bespoke software and high computer literacy, including excellent Excel skills
• Experience using data science packages such as SQL, VBA or Python, or developing analysis tools
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills
• Ability to communicate key messages to internal and external stakeholders
• Right to work in the UK by the start of employment

Responsibilities

• Use pan-European market models such as PLEXOS to assess the impact of projects or policies on electricity network operating costs
• Develop methodologies, tools and models to improve the robustness and timely delivery of analysis
• Write Python scripts to automate modelling processes where appropriate
• Engage with internal and external stakeholders on approaches to cost-benefit analyses
• Lead the scoping and delivery of new analysis and model development
• Represent NESO in cross-industry work
• Ensure robustness of data inputs and present analysis results
• Support delivery of network plans including the Centralised Strategic Network Plan (CSNP)
• Prepare ad-hoc presentations and reports for industry stakeholders and the regulator
• Document processes to ensure they are repeatable and transparent
• Provide oversight, challenge and advice to other team members
• Represent NESO on relevant industry panels when required
