About the role

We are currently seeking Healthcare Assistants to join our Endoscopy teams at The Princess Royal Hospital, Telford and The Royal Shrewsbury Hospital. Candidates should have previous experience working with adults in an Endoscopy or similar environment and possess GCSEs in Maths and English (Grades A‑C or 9‑4) and an NVQ3 in Healthcare or be willing to work towards this. The role does not meet sponsorship requirements; you must hold unrestricted right to work in the UK.

Training

All new staff will take part in a 12‑week supernumerary training programme across our hospital sites, following national standards and Trust policies. You will learn through face‑to‑face learning, hands‑on demonstration, practical assessments and e‑learning.

Site details

You will be based at either site, with a potential requirement for occasional cross‑site work depending on clinical need. Please express your desired site in your application.

Key duties
  • Assist the registered nurse in providing skilled and considerate care during the patient's admission.
  • Undertake safe monitoring of patients during endoscopic procedures, taking into account specific needs and providing reassurance.
  • Provide patient care and monitor vital signs during recovery to ensure safe discharge.
  • Prepare equipment and the environment to enable procedures to be carried out safely and to a high standard; ensure all necessary equipment is in good working order.
  • Provide physical and emotional support to patients, maintaining their dignity at all times.
  • Undertake manual cleaning and decontamination of endoscopes post‑procedure, and prepare endoscopes and accessories for procedures.
  • Assist with maintaining stock levels.
  • Assist with maintaining departmental cleanliness according to cleaning checklists.
About the unit

The Endoscopy unit at the Princess Royal Hospital has 4 procedure rooms; at the Royal Shrewsbury Hospital it has 5 rooms. The unit delivers the Bowel Cancer screening service alongside diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy services for outpatients and inpatients. It is a training unit for medical staff and nurse endoscopists and supports ongoing professional development.
