Job overview

We are currently seeking Healthcare Assistants to join our Endoscopy teams at The Princess Royal Hospital, Telford and The Royal Shrewsbury Hospital.

Along with your previous experience of working with adults in an Endoscopy or similar environment, candidates should possess GCSE's in Maths and English (Grades A-C or Grades 9 - 4 or equivalent) and an NVQ 3 in Healthcare or be willing to work towards this.This role does not meet the requirements for Sponsorship, therefore you must hold unrestricted right to work in the UK.

All new staff joining Endoscopy will take part in a 12 week supernumerary training programme that takes place across our hospital sites. The training follows the latest national standards and guidelines, as well as Trust policies and procedures.

You’ll learn via a mix of face to face learning, hands on demonstration, practical assessments and eLearning, to help you gain the skills and confidence you need to provide excellent care to our patients.

Main duties of the job

Endoscopy is entering an exciting phase of transformation, with new services and facilities planned across both sites—The Princess Royal Hospital, Telford and The Royal Shrewsbury Hospital. If successful, you will be based at either of these sites, however there may be a requirement to occasionally work cross-site, depending on clinical need.Please express your desire of site in your application.

Key duties will include;

  • Assisting the registered nurse in providing skilled and considerate care during the patients admission;
  • Undertake safe monitoring of patients during Endoscopic procedures taking into account the patients specific needs. Providing reassurance to the patient.
  • Providing patient care and monitoring of patients vital signs during recovery to ensure a safe patient discharge;
  • Preparing the equipment and the environment to enable the procedures to be carried out safely and to a high standard. Prepare procedure rooms for endoscopic procedures ensuring all necessary equipment is in good working order.
  • Provide physical and emotional support to patients undergoing endoscopic procedures maintaining their dignity at all times.
  • Undertake the manual cleaning and decontamination of endoscopes post procedure. To prepare endoscopes and accessories for Endoscopic procedures.
  • Assist with maintaining stock levels.
  • Assist with the maintenance of departmental cleanliness as per cleaning checklists
Working for our organisation

The Endoscopy unit at The Princess Royal Hospital consists of 4 procedure rooms. The Endoscopy unit at The Royal Shrewsbury Hospital consists of 5 rooms. The unit delivers the Bowel Cancer screening service alongside the diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy service to outpatients and inpatients. We are a training unit, training both medical staff and nurse endoscopists. We are committed to supporting your ongoing professional development.

We would like to invite you to join our motivated and friendly team who are committed to providing a high quality, patient centred Endoscopy service. The team work closely with Gastroenterologists, Colorectal surgeons, Nurse Endoscopists, clinical nurse specialists and other members of the multidisciplinary team. The unit works together with the Research and Innovation Team as it is involved in many clinical trials.

All new staff joining Endoscopy will take part in a 12 week supernumerary training programme that takes place across our hospital sites.

You’ll also be supported throughout your induction, with a dedicated Practice Education Facilitator and mentor with regular feedback to help you feel confident in your role.
