Job description

We have an exciting opportunity within the Business Support Centre's (BSC) Employment Services and we are looking for an enthusiastic and motivated person to join us withing one of our 4 teams listed below.

  • Team 1 - Training administration, DBS administration, advertising administration & recruitment (pre‑employment check and payroll support)
  • Team 2 - Employee changes to contract, Enquiry Team, payment of claims
  • Team 3 - Employee matters, attendance management, family leave, self‑service team
  • Team 4 - Technical team (organisational management, school conversions and pay awards, payroll support). Whilst the successful candidates will initially be placed in either team 1 or team 3, we may ask you to work flexibly to deal with changing priorities - depending on your experience and the needs of the service.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Processing information onto our systems with accuracy
  • Working flexibly and as part of a team to support colleagues during busy times
  • Managing your workload to identify the priorities and ensuring they are dealt with accordingly
  • Dealing with customer enquiries
  • Supporting customers on the use of our systems and forms
  • Taking part in training on systems, processes, and legislation
  • Identifying your own learning and development needs and discussing them with your line managers
  • Making suggestion for ways to improve our service and to work more efficiently
  • Working with high levels of accuracy for tasks such as checking documents and recording numerical and alphabetical information
  • Identify problems and areas for improvement and offer solutions
  • Supporting staff and develop new team members
  • Use own initiative and judgement where appropriate, providing outcomes and solutions for customers from a range of options
  • Maintain knowledge of payroll processes, legislation and policies
  • Work on your own, manage your own workload and use your initiative to adhere to time scales and deadlines
  • Ability to analyse and collate data and use it to produce reports
  • Understanding of legal business, financial, audit, confidential and operational requirements of the service, and the impact on its day‑to‑day work
  • Deal with and resolve payroll specific enquiries received by telephone and email
  • Work flexibly and move within service areas – working at different locations depending on service demand

Working hours will be Monday to Friday. The council offers a range of flexible working opportunities such as part time, term time only and job share. We work in a hybrid way, both at home and in the office, and encourage people to establish the working pattern that suits both them and their team.

Essential Requirements
  • Method of Assessment will be through one or more of the following Application Form, Test, Interview, and Certificate
  • Candidates will only be shortlisted if they can demonstrate on the application form that they meet all the essential requirements.
  • Well‑developed interpersonal and communication skills with a wide range of people including face‑to‑face, telephone and written communication skills. Including the processes for dealing with varied information with a range of audiences.
  • Work with, and within, multiple teams of staff and contribute to its development with suggestions for new ways of working.
  • Knowledge of the applications, systems and IT programmes utilised by the service and being able to accurately record and retrieve information.
  • Knowledge of Contract procedure rules, Payroll processing, Recruitment and selection, Children's safeguarding.
  • Experience of working on your own and using your initiative to adhere to timescales and deadlines.
  • Experience and understanding of the importance of providing excellent customer services and experience of dealing positively with challenging situations.

  • Strong computer skills and the ability to learn new systems quickly
  • Be able to communicate in clear and plain English and be able to build relationships with customers
  • Be an effective team member who can relate to colleagues at all levels
  • Be able to use initiative to identify issues and suggest suitable solutions
  • Be willing to learn further practical skills and development through training and assessments
Legally Required
  • The role is based in the UK. Home Office guidance states that candidates must evidence their right to work in the UK prior to commencing employment, either as a UK or Irish citizen, under the EU Settlement scheme or having secured any other relevant work visa.
  • If you do not have the right to work in the UK, you must consider your own eligibility for sponsorship for a particular role through the Skilled Worker visa route before applying.
