Job summary

ALTEN Ltd. in the United Kingdom seeks an experienced embedded software engineer to design, implement, and optimise real-time applications for complex systems.

You will contribute across the software lifecycle, from architecture through verification, with close collaboration across systems, electronics, and test teams. Based in Plymouth, the role is on-site three days per week, requires 5+ years in industry, and willingness to obtain SC clearance.

Qualifications

• Proven experience developing embedded software in C and/or C++ in complex engineering environments.
• Experience with Linux-based or real-time operating systems.
• Strong understanding of software architecture, design principles and lifecycle processes.
• Experience integrating software with hardware platforms and supporting system-level integration.
• Knowledge of verification, validation, debugging and performance optimisation techniques.

Job Description

This is an opportunity to develop software for advanced embedded and real‑time applications within a highly innovative engineering environment. You will contribute throughout the software lifecycle, supporting system integration, verification activities, and the delivery of high‑quality software solutions.

Location: Plymouth
On‑site Requirement: 3 Days Per Week
Seniority: 5+ Years Experience
Security Clearance: Candidates must be willing and eligible to obtain SC clearance.

Key Responsibilities

• Design, develop, and maintain embedded software applications.
• Support software architecture, coding, testing, and verification activities.
• Integrate software with hardware platforms and wider system architectures.
• Debug and optimise software performance across target environments.

• Collaborate with systems, electronics, and test engineering teams.

Qualifications

Required Skills

• Proven experience developing embedded software using C and/or C++ within complex engineering environments.
• Experience working with Linux‑based or real‑time operating systems.
• Strong understanding of software architecture, design principles, and lifecycle development processes.
• Experience integrating software with hardware platforms and supporting system‑level integration activities.
• Knowledge of software verification, validation, debugging, and performance optimisation techniques.

Soft Skills & Collaboration

• Strong communication skills with the ability to work effectively across multidisciplinary teams.
• Ability to manage competing priorities while maintaining high engineering standards.

Required Qualifications

• Bachelor's or Master's degree in Engineering, or relevant technical military background with equivalent experience.

Desirable Skills

• Experience using Git or similar version control tools.
• Knowledge of sensor integration and data processing applications.
• Familiarity with Agile software development methodologies.
• Experience working within requirements‑driven engineering environments.
