Job summary

Archangel Autonomy in Oxford designs and deploys edge AI hardware. We seek an Embedded Software Engineer to design, prototype and build software for our edge compute devices powering the UXV navigation co-pilot platform.

You will work with a skilled team to develop drivers, boot logic, board bring‑up, DL inference, cameras, IoT mesh, and power monitoring, while enabling rapid hardware/software prototyping and integration with other teams.

Qualifications

• Essential degree in electronic engineering, computer science or related field.
• Experience delivering functioning embedded software for commercial products.
• Strong C/C++ skills, Python familiarity, and OO principles.
• Knowledge of Linux, kernel programming and interfaces (SPI, UART, CAN, USB).
• Experience bare-metal/embedded development (STM32, ARM Cortex‑M0, RTOS).
• Able to travel for events/field tests in the UK and abroad up to 10%.

Responsibilities

• Capture requirements, design, build and test software for edge compute devices.
• Develop and integrate software/firmware across drivers, boot logic, board bring‑up, DL inference, cameras, and wireless mesh.
• Support rapid PCB prototyping, liaise with teams to integrate components.
• Research new microcontrollers and embedded systems for prototyping features.
• Test software and devices, including range tests and performance measurements.

Archangel engineers design and deploy low-SWaP embedded devices to enable edge AI in the air and on the ground. These incorporate cameras, IMUs, LIDARs, , radios (4G, LoRaWAN, mesh), compute, batteries and more. To deliver compelling products to our users we need to get the most out of the hardware devices and software we build.

Joining us as Embedded Software Engineer, you will design, prototype and build software for our embedded systems, principally our UXV navigation co-pilot platform.

Role responsibilities:

You will capture requirements, design, build, and test software for our small volume, fully functioning edge compute devices.

This includes developing and integrating software or firmware in these areas:

• Drivers
• Boot logic
• Board bring-up / testing
• Deep learning inference
• Cameras and ISPs
• Wireless Mesh & IoT comms
• Battery power monitoring GPS/GNSS positioning

You will also:

• Support our development teams with rapid prototyping of PCBs
• Liaise with other development teams to integrate various components
• Research and select new microcontrollers and embedded systems to prototype new products or features on
• Work on testing of software and devices, e.g. range testing radios, measuring solar charging efficiency or deep learning model accuracy in real-world tests

Requirements

Essential skills/ experience:

• BSc or MSc degree in Electronic Engineering, Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or related engineering field
• Experience delivering functioning commercial embedded software
• Excellent C/C++ skills & familiarity with Python and object-oriented programming
• Understanding of Linux and kernel programming (Device trees) as well as interfaces (SPI, UART, CAN, USB)
• Proficiency developing for bare metal and embedded devices (e.g. STM32, ARM Cortex-M0, RTOS)
• Able to travel for events and field tests in the UK and abroad up to 10% of the time

Experience and/or understanding of one or more of the components or peripherals in our embedded devices is desirable:

• Camera modules, sensors, and ISPs
• Modern embedded wireless technologies and standards (LoRa, Wi-Fi, 4G, mesh etc.)
• Experience with battery technologies and knowledge of control theory
• Deploying software on Nvidia Jetson, or Raspberry Pi or ARM devices
