Email & Messaging Engineer | Energy Trading | Manchester, Hybrid | Salary Competitive + Bonus

We are looking for a Lead Email Engineer to take ownership of the company's email infrastructure to ensure reliability, performance and security for Microsoft 365 supporting daily communication across global offices including critical business operations. This is both a strategic and hands‑on position, ideal for someone with deep technical expertise in Microsoft Exchange technologies who can also lead a small team and work closely with senior stakeholders across IT, security, and compliance. The role will drive technical direction, lead enhancements, and ensure integration with adjacent systems and platforms in a tightly regulated, performance‑driven environment.

The Lead Email Engineer Role:

As the Lead Email Engineer, you will take ownership of the full lifecycle of the firm’s email and messaging infrastructure, managing both on‑premises and cloud‑based environments, with a primary focus on Microsoft Exchange and Microsoft 365. You’ll play a leadership role by mentoring a junior engineer, setting the technical direction, and ensuring that all deliverables meet the firm’s high operational standards. A key part of your role will involve maintaining and enhancing integrations between the messaging platform and other enterprise systems such as management, endpoint management, and security tools. You will also be responsible for overseeing all patching, upgrades, business continuity planning, and disaster recovery processes to ensure the reliability and resilience of the firm’s messaging systems. You’ll help implement and enforce governance policies that align with compliance, retention, and security requirements, ensuring that all operations adhere to industry best practices and internal standards. Collaboration is central to this position as you’ll work closely with security, infrastructure, and support teams to deliver a seamless and consistent experience across the wider digital workplace ecosystem. Finally, you will drive ongoing improvement by identifying opportunities to automate routine tasks and refine processes, contributing to greater efficiency, scalability, and service quality across the messaging environment.

Skills Required for the Lead Email Engineer:
  • Expertise in Microsoft Exchange (on‑prem & online), including hybrid configurations.
  • Strong knowledge of email security and compliance tools – e.g., Microsoft Defender for Office 365, Enterprise Vault, Purview.
  • Familiar with automation and scripting (PowerShell essential; familiarity with Terraform desirable).
  • Experience working with and device management platforms such as Entra ID (Azure AD), Intune, and enterprise application integrations.
  • Proven ability to operate in a highly regulated environment, with a strong focus on control, documentation, and audit readiness.
  • Capable of translating business needs into technical solutions, and comfortable engaging with non‑technical stakeholders.
