IonQ, Inc. is seeking an Electronics Engineering Manager to lead the electronics function within our Systems team. You will manage a team of three electronics engineers, setting the technical direction and delivering electronic subsystems for our quantum computers.
The role combines leadership (60%) with hands-on design work (40%), driving architecture, verification, and the move from prototypes to rack-ready systems. Experience in fast-moving, highly technical hardware environments is essential.
IonQ, Inc . [NYSE: IONQ] is the world's leading quantum platform and merchant supplier - delivering integrated quantum solutions across computing, networking, sensing, and security. IonQ's newest generation of quantum computers, the IonQ Tempo, is the latest in a line of cutting-edge systems that have been helping customers and partners including Amazon Web Services, and AstraZeneca achieve 20x performance results and accelerate innovation in drug discovery, materials science, financial modelling, logistics, cybersecurity, and defense. In 2025, the company achieved 99.99% two-qubit gate fidelity, setting a world record in quantum computing performance.
Headquartered in College Park, Maryland, IonQ has operations in California, Colorado, Massachusetts, Tennessee, Washington, Italy, South Korea, Sweden, Switzerland, Canada, and the United Kingdom. Our quantum computing services are available through all major cloud providers, while we also meet the needs of networking and sensing customers across land, sea, air, and space. IonQ is making quantum platforms more accessible and impactful than ever before.
We are looking for an Electronics Engineering Manager to lead the electronics function within our Systems team at IonQ. You will lead a team of three electronics engineers and grow it as our programmes scale. The team designs, builds and tests the electronics subsystems behind our mission to build the most performant quantum computers.
This is a player-coach role, with roughly 60% of your time spent leading the team and 40% on hands‑on design work. You will set the technical direction for our electronics deliverables and build a team that can deliver them reliably, from experimental prototypes to rack‑ready production systems.
You will own the electronics roadmap for current and next‑generation quantum systems. That covers schematic capture and PCB layout through to board and system‑level test, and the drive architecture for QPU designs.
You will balance hands‑on technical leadership with people management, planning and coordination across teams. As the main electronics contact for the physics, firmware, mechanical and systems teams, you will turn complex physical requirements into clear, achievable engineering plans, and you will keep improving the tooling, workflow and capability of the team.
Key responsibilities include:
To succeed, you will need around ten years of experience in electronics design, with a strong background in high‑speed and mixed‑signal electronics, proven experience leading engineers and a track record of taking hardware from concept through prototype to production on schedule. You should be able to give credible technical guidance while growing the team around you, and bring a high level of attention to detail to your own work and to the designs you review.
You will be comfortable in a fast‑moving, highly technical environment and know when to use waterfall or agile delivery in a hardware setting. Experience with Jira and Smartsheet, exposure to cryogenic environments, RF/microwave engineering (up to 500 MHz) or Python‑based test automation, and familiarity with the Sinara/ARTIQ ecosystem in a quantum or physics research setting would all be an advantage.
you'd be a great fit with:
Compensation will vary based on individual factors such as education, qualifications, and experience of the final candidate(s), specific office location, and calibration against relevant market data and internal team equity. Posted base salary figures are subject to change as new market data becomes available.
