Be-IT is seeking an experienced Electronics Engineer to join our Hardware and Platform teams in Edinburgh. You will design embedded hardware for IoT edge systems, shaping architecture, selecting components, and bringing designs from schematic to shipped product in demanding real-world conditions.

The role requires 5+ years in embedded hardware, strong schematic capture, and a track record of low-power device design, with hands-on debugging and EMI/EMC practices.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Electronic Engineering or related discipline.
  • 5+ years' professional experience in embedded hardware or electronics design.
  • Solid schematic capture experience and comfort with ECAD libraries.
  • Track record of designing and optimising low-power devices.
  • Familiarity with circuit simulation, analysis, and optimisation tools.
  • Experience with in-circuit test, JTAG, and hardware debugging tools.
  • Strong fault-finding and root-cause analysis skills.
  • Exposure to component selection, MCU operation, and analogue/digital sensor interfacing.
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills.

Responsibilities

  • Design embedded electronic hardware for IoT edge systems (MCUs, memory, power management, sensors, interfaces).
  • Shape system-level architecture, hardware requirements, and technology choices for new and existing products.
  • Produce schematics and PCB layouts in ECAD tools; maintain design documentation.
  • Select and qualify components with focus on performance, reliability, cost, and long-term availability.
  • Design and optimise low-power, battery-powered systems with long field life.
  • Integrate wired and wireless interfaces and radio modules.
  • Lead prototype bring-up, debugging, and board-level fault finding.
  • Collaborate with Hardware QA on verification, validation, and compliance testing.

Job description

Ever wondered what stops a manhole exploding under a city street, or a substation being tampered with before anyone notices? That's the world our client operates in. They build real-time monitoring technology that protects critical national infrastructure - electricity, gas, water, transport, and communications networks - detecting and preventing the human and natural interference that leads to costly damage, service disruption, and safety incidents.

It's a small, close-knit engineering team where everyone works as a generalist - dipping into electronics, firmware, mechanical design, data, software, and even machine learning. It's a genuinely hands-on environment, and you'll see your work go from schematic to shipped product in the field.

They're now looking for an Electronics Engineer to join their Hardware and Platform teams, working on high-reliability IoT edge systems deployed in demanding, real-world conditions - in a market set for significant growth over the next decade.

What you'll be doing
  • Designing embedded electronic hardware for IoT edge systems - microcontrollers, memory, power management, sensors and comms interfaces
  • Shaping system-level architecture, hardware requirements, and technology choices for new and existing products
  • Producing schematics and PCB layouts in ECAD tools, and keeping design documentation in good order
  • Selecting and qualifying components with an eye on performance, reliability, cost, and long-term availability
  • Designing and optimising low-power, battery-powered systems built for long field life
  • Integrating wired and wireless comms interfaces and radio modules
  • Leading prototype bring-up, debugging, and board-level fault finding
  • Working closely with Hardware QA on verification, validation, and compliance testing
  • Applying good design practice for EMI/EMC, electrical robustness, and long-term reliability
  • Supporting manufacturing and supply chain - pilot builds, supplier engagement, production troubleshooting
  • Contributing to Design for Test, Manufacture, and Reliability initiatives
  • Getting involved in design reviews, risk assessments, and continuous improvement (including ISO 9001)
What you'll bring
  • A Bachelor's degree in Electronic Engineering or a related discipline
  • 5+ years' professional experience in embedded hardware or electronics design
  • Solid schematic capture experience, and comfort with ECAD libraries and component management
  • A track record of designing and optimising low-power devices
  • Familiarity with circuit simulation, analysis, and optimisation tools
  • Experience with in-circuit test, JTAG, and hardware debugging tools
  • Strong fault-finding and root-cause analysis skills
  • Some exposure to component selection, microcontroller operation, and analogue/digital sensor interfacing
  • Strong analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills
Nice to have - they're happy to help you build these:
  • PCB design and layout experience
  • Hands-on prototyping and breadboarding skills
  • Experience integrating communication modules, or with RF circuit design/antenna selection
  • Understanding of EMI/EMC best practice, signal integrity, or power integrity
  • Experience designing industrial or infrastructure-focused IoT systems (sensors, gateways, remote monitoring)
  • Familiarity with PADs Pro or DX Designer
  • Exposure to embedded firmware development
  • Familiarity with environmental, electrical safety, or compliance testing
  • Experience with Agile/iterative development, Jira, or Confluence
  • Awareness of functional safety, reliability engineering, or product security principles
