You will help maintain the safe and reliable operation of critical electrical and building services, while working closely with the wider Facilities Management team, contractors and site management.

HMP & YOI Bronzefield is a closed local prison and the largest female prison in the UK and Europe. The establishment supports a diverse population and provides a range of facilities including residential units, healthcare, workshops, a gym, library, visits hall, chaplaincy and kitchen facilities.

What you will do

  • Carry out planned preventative and reactive electrical maintenance.

  • Diagnose faults and complete safe, effective and timely repairs.

  • Maintain and support electrical systems including distribution equipment, lighting, emergency lighting, small power and plant room electrical services.

  • Support generators, standby power, UPS/IPS systems, fire alarm interfaces and BMS controls within your competence and authorisation.

  • Complete electrical testing, like-for-like replacements and minor electrical works.

  • Follow electrical safety procedures, including permits, isolations, lock-off requirements, risk assessments and safe systems of work.

  • Maintain accurate maintenance, testing and compliance records.

  • Supervise and escort specialist contractors and support minor works, testing and commissioning.

  • Support apprentices and colleagues where appropriate and within your competence.

  • Report defects, risks, repeat failures and service issues promptly.

  • Participate in the out-of-hours call-out rota and work five days in seven, including occasional weekends.

What you will need

  • NVQ Level 3, City & Guilds or recognised equivalent qualification in Electrical Installation, Electrical Engineering, Building Services Engineering or a related discipline.

  • City & Guilds Level 3 Inspection and Testing qualification, or recognised equivalent.

  • Two to three years of recent practical electrical maintenance experience in a commercial or technical maintenance environment.

  • Experience carrying out planned and reactive maintenance, like-for-like replacements and minor electrical works.

  • Strong fault-finding and diagnostic skills, with the ability to complete safe and effective repairs.

  • Good understanding of electrical safety, isolation procedures, permits and safe systems of work.

  • Ability to read and interpret electrical drawings, schematics, O&M manuals and technical information.

  • Good communication and accurate record-keeping skills.

  • A dependable, professional and team-focused approach, with the ability to work safely and respectfully within a secure prison environment.

It would be advantageous to have experience or qualifications in:

  • Low-voltage Authorised Person or Competent Person duties.

  • HVAC, AHUs, controls or BMS.

  • Generators, UPS/IPS systems or fire alarm interfaces.

  • Maximo or another computerised maintenance management system.

  • Custodial, PFI, secure or similarly regulated environments.

  • Confined spaces or health and safety training.

The role may offer the opportunity to work towards formal appointment as a Low Voltage Authorised Person (LV AP), subject to site requirements, successful training and assessment, and formal appointment.

Working at HMP & YOI Bronzefield

This role requires you to work within a live prison environment. You will need to follow strict safety and security procedures and work with care, professionalism and respect in every interaction.

Sodexo operates with three core values: Be Positive, Be Courageous and Be the Difference.
