Job description
Overview

We are seeking an experienced Electrical Technical Support Engineer to be based at our Hampton Sewage Treatment Works. You will be part of a team providing all-around technical support to the Electrical Services team across process operations and Capital Delivery. This would include the exercise of scrutiny over the installation of new assets to ensure these are constructed and commissioned by the TWUL asset standards. The delivery of directly managed projects is included as a responsibility of this role.

At Thames Water, we operate a significant number of high voltage (HV) and low voltage (LV) electrical power networks. These important electrical assets are central to the water production and waste treatment process for our 15 million customers.

As the Electrical Technical Support Engineer, your role will be to maintain the safe and reliable operation of these critical electrical assets. A high level of knowledge and skills is required in the application of electrical technology, electrical safety procedures and an understanding of the importance of providing expert support to the core process operations. The teams actively involved in the frontline operation and maintenance of the electrical assets require a continuous level of technical support in resolving problems, implementing solutions, delivering asset upgrade programmes and investigating unsafe or undesirable incidents.

What you’ll be doing as the Electrical Technical Support Engineer
  • Provide a technical support service to support and advise on the operation and maintenance of electrical systems. Provide input to the risk management process.
  • Timely input and liaison support to high voltage or complex low voltage asset upgrade schemes. Identify and deliver directly managed capital programmes.
  • Carry out electrical system failure investigations or unsafe events and produce reports.
  • Carry out actions as necessary to manage maintenance reports, asset registers, manuals and other technical information.
  • Undertake asset assessment surveys and produce recommendations. Support site inspections and deliver solutions on actions arising.
  • Coach and mentor others in preparation for appointment as Authorised Person and improve technical competence through a development plan.
  • Review of risk assessments & method statements to ensure that the electrical safety arrangements are appropriate. Review contractor electrical safety procedures and safe systems of work.
  • There is an expectation that the role will be part of an out-of-hours support system to cover the electrical networks across the business when implemented. This role will require appointment as an Authorised Person for high voltage and low voltage networks by a development plan.

Base Location - Hampton Coal Wharf - TW12 2ES.

Working hours 38 Hours Monday, plus the inclusion in an out-of-hours support rota for which you will receive additional payment.

What you should bring to the role
  • HNC, NVQ Level 3 in electrical engineering or significant related experience.
  • Formal training in the Requirements for Electrical Installations BS7671.
  • Appointment as an Authorised Person for high voltage or low voltage systems.
  • Proven working experience in industrial electrical power and engineering.
  • Understanding of the Electricity as Work Regulations and their application to the business.
  • Experience in the application of electrical engineering within a large industrial utility or water company.
  • Working knowledge of health and safety regulations and, in particular, electrical safety rules and procedures.
  • Training and operational experience as an Authorised Person.
  • Engaging with process operations teams, contractors and other third parties.
  • Experience in mentoring and coaching others.
  • Producing maintenance and fault-finding activity reports.
What’s in it for you?
  • Offering a salary up to £58,000 per annum, depending on skills and experience, plus a car allowance, tools, and PPE.
  • Annual Leave: 24 days holiday per year, increasing to 28 with the length of service. (Plus bank holidays)
  • Generous Pension Scheme through AON.
  • Access to lots of benefits to help you take care of you and your family’s health and wellbeing, and your finances – from annual health MOTs and access to physiotherapy and counselling, to Cycle to Work schemes, shopping vouchers and life assurance.
  • Performance-related pay plan directly linked to company performance measures and targets.
