Job description

The relentless consumer shift to online retail and rapid fulfilment, a changing urban landscape prioritising pedestrians and cyclists and the growth of zero emission zones is causing the logistics industry to evolve quickly.
ELM’s small, lightweight and configurable commercial vehicle platform supported by integrated telematics and fleet data analysis right-sizes the logistics solution for the city and delivers a step change in efficiency for urban environments.
The next phase of ELM’s evolution focuses upon developing the production vehicles and supporting technologies to enable certification.

Working Environment:

Dynamic startup setting with a flat structure and high ownership and close collaboration across all functions, partners and suppliers.
Lean structure
Office based with hands-on engagement during builds, testing, and supplier activities.
Travel as required to build and maintain strong relationships with Partners and Suppliers.

Role Overview:

The Electrification & Powertrain Lead is accountable for the electrical and propulsion system architecture for ELM’s production vehicles. You will own HV/LV distribution, powertrain integration, controls, diagnostics, safety circuits, and EE system coherence. You will lead electrical and powertrain integration through prototype builds, vehicle bring up, debugging, and validation.
Working cross functionally, you will coordinate internal engineering, software, design, manufacturing, and external development partners to ensure electrification systems operate safely, reliably, and consistently throughout development.

Key Responsibilities:

Electrical & Powertrain Architecture

  • Own the HV/LV electrical architecture, including distribution, CAN networks, safety circuits, and diagnostics.
  • Define and maintain electrical ICDs, network maps, and system baselines.
  • Own powertrain integration across motor, inverter, DC/DC, BMS, HV distribution, and auxiliary loads.
Vehicle Bring Up & Debugging
  • Lead HV commissioning, inverter/EDU integration, BMS communication validation, and functional powertrain checks.
  • Diagnose and resolve electrical, software, and integration issues (CAN traffic, calibration mismatches, state machine faults, ECU configuration).
  • Support rapid iteration loops: diagnose ? test ? validate ? release.
Controls, Safety & Validation
  • Support development of DFMEA, system safety concepts, and functional validation plans.
  • Ensure electrical and powertrain systems meet safety, EMC, and regulatory requirements.
  • Maintain structured documentation suitable for downstream use.
Technical Coordination & Issue Resolution
  • Coordinate electrification delivery across internal teams and external development partners.
  • Ensure ECUs, sensors, actuators, and power electronics integrate cleanly into the platform.
  • Manage cross functional reviews, issue resolution, and structured escalation.
Qualifications And Experience:
  • Degree in Electrical Engineering, Controls, Mechatronics, or related technical discipline (or equivalent experience).
  • Strong experience with BEV electrical systems including HV batteries, inverters, DC/DC converters, EDUs, BMS, and LV architectures.
  • Hands on experience commissioning and debugging powertrain systems (inverter/motor pairing, resolver issues, CAN mapping, torque control bring up).
  • Ability to diagnose software related issues (CAN traffic, calibration mismatches, state machine faults, ECU configuration).
  • Experience developing or supporting vehicle electrical architectures (LV/HV distribution, CAN networks, safety circuits).
  • Comfortable working from incomplete information and creating clarity through structured engineering judgement.
  • Familiarity with L category vehicles, lightweight structures, or EV platforms (advantageous).
  • Comfortable operating in a fast moving, early stage environment.
Key Competencies:
  • Delivery focused, structured and action oriented.
  • Systems thinking — understands how electrical, software, mechanical and propulsion subsystems interact.
  • Diagnostic mindset — structured, methodical, calm under pressure during vehicle bring up.
  • Clear communicator who aligns teams, partners and senior stakeholders.
  • Pragmatic, data informed and comfortable making decisions under uncertainty.
  • High ownership mentality with hands on follow through and escalation discipline.
