Job summary

Amentum in the United Kingdom is seeking an Electrical Systems Engineer to join the Independent Assurance & Regulation team in Bristol. You will support MOD submarine programmes, applying electrical systems know-how across in-service, manufacturing and life‑extension activities.

You’ll assess safety, risk and quality arguments, work with cross-disciplinary teams, and mentor graduates where appropriate, while contributing to knowledge sharing and continuous improvement in a demanding engineering

Qualifications

• Relevant engineering or scientific degree.
• Experience with electrical systems in safety/mission-critical contexts (nuclear/aerospace).
• Ability to assess complex safety arguments and communicate findings clearly.
• Strong written and verbal communication with customers and stakeholders.
• Ability to work autonomously across multiple tasks.

About the Opportunity

The Independent Assurance & Regulation (IA&R) team has a primary focus on three key areas; Independent Oversight & Assurance, Technology Development, and Regulatory Support. We have been directly involved in the Royal Navy’s Nuclear Submarine Programme for over six decades, as well as supporting the UK Civil Nuclear & Decommissioning industry

To support the growth of the IA&R business, we are seeking a skilled and experienced Electrical Systems Engineer to be based in our Bristol Office, working within an established yet growing team supporting the Ministry of Defence (MOD) Submarine Delivery Group (SDG) Nuclear Propulsion team in the UK Nuclear Submarine Programme.

This role provides a diverse and exciting range of opportunities to work directly with MOD to support the UK submarine programme in relation to electrical systems, during in-service, manufacturing, plant-life extension and through next generation concept design, to ensure the Continuous At-Sea Deterrent (CASD). The role involves supporting the client to ensure that electrical systems, technologies, and processes are safe, effective, compliant, and future-ready.

This includes the provision of safety and project advice for the future Naval Reactor Plant (NRP), which involves working to provide balanced, proportionate and timely support. This work requires a general knowledge of the design and operation of the NRP, safety case development and methodologies, and the ability to communicate effectively.

This role is ideal for a confident and ambitious engineer, several years into their career or a seasoned veteran. This role would also suit a former RN Cat A Watchkeeper looking for an opportunity to apply their knowledge of the naval reactor plant. We are seeking individuals across a variety of different grade profiles, dependant on experience level. Flexibility is key to the role, and you will have the opportunity to apply your skills in a variety of submarine related applications.

Engineering Delivery Across IA&R

• Support delivery teams with electrical systems engineering support and technical advice
• Provide authoritative advice and support to MOD on the management, production, control and approval of the electrical systems aspects of the naval nuclear safety case and engineering documentation
• Advise on safety case expectations and requirements for safety campaigns with internal stakeholders and external supply chain partners
• Represent the team in internal and external project, technical and safety meetings

Collaboration & Stakeholder Engagement

• Work collaboratively with other engineering disciplines, quality, safety, and delivery teams.
• Communicate engineering requirements, constraints, and solutions clearly to stakeholders.

Capability Development & Knowledge Sharing

• Contribute to knowledge sharing, technical forums, and best practice development.
• Support mentoring and development of graduate and early-career engineers where appropriate.

Here’s What You’ll Need

• Technical competence and experience in electrical systems engineering, demonstrated through a relevant Engineering or Scientific Degree.
• Experience of working with electrical systems used in safety or mission critical applications such as nuclear or aerospace.
• Strong awareness of engineering risk, safety, and quality requirements. An ability to critically assess complex technical and safety arguments, based upon knowledge and understanding and communicate the findings effectively.
• Ability to clearly communicate with customers and stakeholders both verbally and in written form
• Ability to work autonomously and across a range of tasks effectively
• Membership of (or working towards) a chartership by a professional institution is desirable
• Commitment to professional development and contribution to CoE development.
