Job summary

Kraken is seeking an Integrations Engineer to help scale site integrations in the UK, starting from initial information gathering through design and into live market-enabled assets.

You'll work within an engineering delivery team in Manchester, contributing to hardware/software deployments, gateway configuration, and ongoing improvements while collaborating with delivery managers and customer success.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's in Electrical Engineering, Automation/Control, Software, or a related field.
• Willingness to travel to customers and sites; travel is very occasional.
• Experience with IT/OT security in the energy sector (IEC 62443, NIS).
• Edge deployment familiarity (AWS IoT Greengrass or similar) is a bonus.
• Understanding of grid compliance and energy market processes is advantageous.

As our UK fleet grows and we support our expansion across Europe, we are looking for an Integrations Engineer to help turn customer sites into market-connected, controllable assets.

Where you’ll fit in and role summary

As we scale our fleet of integrated assets, we are looking for an Electrical Engineer to support the delivery of our site integrations and grow into owning them, learning the full lifecycle from the early information stage through design, deployment and testing.

You’ll be part of an engineering delivery team, based in Manchester, who take an integration project from the very early information stage, design how it will be integrated into Kraken’s platform and then turn that design into a live, controllable, market-participating asset.

Engineering delivery is an innovative and engineering-focused team with a culture that fosters collaboration and fresh thinking to create a new energy system. Alongside design, deployment and testing; they constantly look into ways to improve efficiency through tooling and the automation of repetitive tasks. They collaborate daily with delivery managers and customer success to onboard new sites as well as support the existing.

What you'll own

• Integration design contribution: With guidance, analyse provided information and contribute to hardware and software integration approaches. When necessary, exchange information with customer technical representatives through meetings and emails, and take part in design discussions with other team members.

• Technical judgement: Develop your technical judgement, making well-reasoned decisions and trade-offs with support from senior engineers, and contributing technical input to discussions within the team.

• Developing domain knowledge: Build up your knowledge in one or more technical areas. This could include grid regulations (G99, G100, Grid Code etc.), energy markets, multi BMUs, industrial communication protocols, industrial networking, internet of things, cyber security and so on.

• Gateway application & configuration: Learn how the Gateway software (developed by an internal software team) works and how it is configured. Understand the requirements for an integration and judge if the gateway software is able to support it or will need new development work. The team will help you get gateway configuration literate and you will carry out deployments and changes independently over time.

• Hardware and Software Deployments: Learn the process of our hardware and software deployments. Over time, take ownership of the configuration, deployment and testing with guidance from the senior engineers.

• Networking and cyber security: Contribute to hardware and network connectivity designs, keeping our own cyber security posture in mind as well as addressing the concerns from customers, with the support of the internal security team.

• Site testing & commissioning: Carry out site testing and commissioning initially with the support of the team and building toward doing this independently as onboarding demand grows.

• Incidents & compliance: Help address engineering help requests from other teams and support incident response in the case of issues at existing sites.

What you'll bring to the party

• Understanding of the Regulations: Working knowledge of the UK Grid Code, G99 and the other obligations of a grid-connected asset before it can participate in the energy markets.

• Understanding of the UK Energy Markets: Working understanding of the NESO ancillary services (Dynamic Containment / Moderation / Regulation, Firm Frequency Response), the Balancing Mechanism, and the DNO connection/integration process.

• Technical judgement: Sound technical judgement and a structured approach to problems, working with the team to agree and implement a solution.

• Power plant systems: Ability to read and analyse single line diagrams for a given power plant to understand the site architecture for the points of metering and control instrumentation.

• Asset integration: Exposure to, or a keen interest in, integrating BESS (grid-scale and/or C&I) and/or RES (Wind and Solar) for telemetry and control.

• Integration design: Ability to contribute to clear integration designs and design documentation.

• Hardware and Networking: Familiarity with control systems deployments and their connectivity including the local networking and cyber security aspects, and an ability to help debug site connectivity and networking issues (including 4G routers and firewalls) with support.

• Industrial Communication Protocols: Practical experience or a good working knowledge of Modbus (TCP/RTU); awareness of one or more of IEC 60870-5-104, IEC 61400-25, OPC-UA or DNP3 is a plus.

• CAD, Diagrams and Tools: Experience or familiarity with CAD tools such as AutoCAD or BricsCAD, Miro and Notion.

• Communication: A clear communicator who documents their work (e.g. in design docs and Notion) and collaborates well with the team.

• Commissioning landscape: Awareness of the other parties involved in site commissioning for power plants, their roles and responsibilities, and how we work with them.

• Engineering background: Bachelor's in Electrical Engineering, Automation/Control, Software, or a related field - or equivalent practical experience in industrial/energy integration.

• A proactive and collaborative mindset: You are eager to learn and grow, reliable and collaborative. You take initiative, communicate openly, raise risks early, and care about safe working. You welcome feedback, support your teammates, and steadily build toward taking on more independent ownership of integrations over time.

• Travel: Willingness to travel to customers and sites although travel is very occasional. Awareness of site safety is required as we may work with site personnel even though we are remote.

Bonus points

• Wider knowledge of grid compliance (G99, G100, Grid Code) and where the Kraken system fits in.

• Experience with AWS IoT Greengrass or similar edge-deployment architectures.

• Familiarity with software/scripting and templating (e.g. Python, Rust, the Linux command line) and Git-based workflows.

• Understanding of IT/OT security in the energy sector (IEC 62443, NIS Regulations awareness).

• Exposure to wider European balancing markets / ENTSO-E frameworks and TSO integrations.
