Job Description

Equans is looking for an Electrical Design Engineer (Decarbonisation & Energy Solutions) to join our team in London or Manchester. This is a full‑time role. On offer is a competitive salary, company vehicle, and benefits package.

The Electrical Design Engineer (Intermediate) contributes to the design and delivery of low‑carbon electrical systems across a range of retrofit and energy efficiency projects. Working under the guidance of senior engineers, the role includes developing integrating low‑carbon electrical systems such as solar PV, battery storage, LED lighting, and building power infrastructure.

This role offers the opportunity to build technical expertise, develop project delivery skills, and actively support the UK’s decarbonisation and net‑zero goals through innovative engineering solutions.

What will you deliver?
Electrical Design & Engineering
  • Assist with electrical system designs across all RIBA Stages.
  • Design and integrate low‑carbon energy solutions, such as power distribution, solar PV, battery storage, LED lighting, and smart controls for the integration of heat pumps, and other energy‑efficiency measures typical of sustainable retrofit into new and existing buildings.
  • Conduct load assessments, equipment sizing, and compliance checks (BS 7671, IET Wiring Regs, UK Building Regs).
  • Support energy modelling and system simulations using Amtech, Dialux, Relux, PVSol, IES, Energy Pro, and other tools.
  • Ensure compliance with relevant standards (CIBSE, PAS 2035, MCS, UK Building Regs) and guidelines.
  • Support coordination of BIM and CAD‑based design processes.
Design Documentation & Coordination
  • Assist in preparing technical reports, drawings, specifications, and schedules.
  • Coordinate with energy, electrical, and project delivery teams to ensure holistic system design.
  • Participate in design team meetings, capturing key actions and learning opportunities.
Project & Technical Support
  • Support and assist with risk reviews, design updates, and supplier engagement.
  • Provide technical input during procurement and early‑stage contractor liaison.
  • Support internal teams with planning and funding application inputs.
  • Assist in identifying design risks and contribute to risk mitigation strategies and update the design risk registers.
Team Development & Collaboration
  • Collaborate closely with senior engineers for mentoring and guidance.
  • Participate in design workshops and CPD sessions.
  • Support knowledge‑sharing within the team and adopt best practices.
  • Liaise with the design and project teams to ensure smooth progression into delivery.
Client & Stakeholder Engagement
  • Assist in preparing documents and presentations to clients (internal and external).
  • Effectively communicate technical concepts clearly to internal and external stakeholders.
  • Support senior team members in engaging with clients and external stakeholders.
Retrofit Strategy
  • Support internal teams and external clients in decarbonisation projects such as ReFit, PSDS, Warmer Homes, GHNF, and HNES.
  • Support the development of decarbonisation project planning for public and private sector clients, including local authorities, social housing associations, healthcare, and commercial organisations.
  • Conduct technical and financial feasibility assessments for low‑carbon electrical systems such as solar PV, battery storage, LED lighting, and building power infrastructure and support technologies such as heat pumps, HVAC, and BMS, ensuring their viability and suitability.
  • Support the retrofit design process, ensuring electrical interventions align with decarbonisation goals and funding criteria.
