Job description

Are you an experienced environmental professional ready to lead on projects that shape a more sustainable future?

Do you enjoy solving complex challenges, inspiring others, and delivering high-quality outcomes that make a real difference?

We're looking for a Technical Director - Environmental Assessment to provide strategic leadership across major water and infrastructure programmes throughout the UK and Ireland.

This is a senior opportunity to guide technical excellence, mentor teams, and play a central role in advancing environmental best practice within a highly regarded, sustainability-focused consultancy.

The Opportunity

In this position, you'll:

  • Lead environmental assessment strategy and delivery for major regulated water and infrastructure projects.
  • Oversee the preparation of environmental appraisals and assessments, ensuring quality, compliance, and alignment with legislative frameworks.
  • Support and mentor a growing team of environmental specialists and consultants across multiple regions.
  • Collaborate with a wide range of technical disciplines to deliver joined-up, sustainable project outcomes.
  • Help shape and deliver an internal environmental training and development programme designed to strengthen capability across the business.
  • Contribute to business strategy, thought leadership, and innovation within environmental management and assessment.

You’ll also have the opportunity to work on a range of wider environmental and sustainability projects beyond EIA, supporting a broad and impactful portfolio of work.

About You

You’ll bring:

  • Extensive experience (20+ years) in environmental assessment, planning, and advisory roles.
  • Strong understanding of UK environmental legislation and consenting processes, ideally with exposure to the water sector.
  • Proven ability to manage complex multi-disciplinary projects and to engage effectively with clients, regulators, and stakeholders.
  • A collaborative and inclusive leadership style, with a passion for developing teams and sharing expertise.
  • A relevant degree in an environmental or related discipline and Chartered status (for example, CIWEM, IEMA, or CIEEM).
  • Experience working within or alongside the regulated utilities or infrastructure sectors.

Knowledge of marine assessment or experience with Development Consent Orders (DCOs) and Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA) would be beneficial, but not essential.

What's on Offer
  • The chance to make a tangible impact on sustainable infrastructure delivery.
  • Work with a large, established environmental team on projects that protect and enhance natural resources.
  • Flexible hybrid working arrangements and choice of office base across multiple UK locations.
  • A progressive, people-focused culture that values innovation, collaboration, and professional development.

If you're an environmental leader ready to take the next step shaping strategy, growing teams, and driving sustainability across major UK projects, we'd love to hear from you.
