Job description

Assessment Officer (EHC Coordinator) – Medway Council – Education & SEND Division
Salary: £31,283
Location: Gun Wharf, with travel across Medway

Are you passionate about improving the lives of children and young people with Special Educational Needs and Disabilities (SEND)? Do you thrive in a fast-paced, people-focused role where every day brings a new opportunity to make a difference?

The Role

As an Assessment Officer (EHC Coordinator), you'll be at the heart of Medway's SEND Assessment Hub. You'll lead on coordinating high-quality Education, Health and Care (EHC) assessments and crafting clear, outcome-focused EHC Plans that truly reflect the aspirations and needs of each child or young person. This is a role where attention to detail meets compassion, where collaboration drives better outcomes, and where your work directly shapes a child's future.

What You'll Be Doing
  • Developing accurate, high-quality EHC Plans based on multi-agency assessments.
  • Driving the statutory 20-week process, ensuring timelines and legal duties are met.
  • Supporting families, acting as a trusted first point of contact during the assessment journey.
  • Coordinating professional advice from across education, health and social care.
  • Ensuring rigorous data management, maintaining clear, transparent communication with all stakeholders.
  • Championing Medway's values, promoting inclusion, safeguarding and positive outcomes for all young people.
What You'll Bring
  • Strong communication skills and the ability to make complex information clear and accessible.
  • Experience working with children, young people or families — ideally within SEND, education, health or social care.
  • Excellent organisational skills with the ability to juggle competing priorities.
  • Confidence in analysing information to shape decisions and plans.
  • A collaborative mindset and the ability to build constructive working relationships across agencies.
  • It is essential that you have worked in a local authority previously, within a SEND service working with EHC Plans.
