Job description

Head of Legal – UK Commercial Risk

The candidate will lead the team responsible for supporting the Commercial Risk Insurance broking business and the Global Broking Centre wholesale business across the UK, including UK branches of Belgium and Netherlands.

The candidate will be required to lead, advise, and work closely with business leaders and legal experts to anticipate, identify, and manage legal and compliance challenges, helping the business achieve its strategic and financial goals.

They will lead a team that interacts with clients, markets, regulatory bodies, industry bodies, distribution partners, and external counsel.

The role requires strong experience in broking within the London market and extensive cross-border business experience. The candidate will lead across geographies and solution lines, working with the UK Aon law team based in London, Manchester, and Poland.

What the day will look like
  1. Provide quality commercial legal support and risk management guidance to UK Commercial Risk and other UK businesses, ensuring compliance with policies, laws, and regulations.
  2. Build relationships with UK Commercial Risk and GBC leaders, supporting their growth strategies.
  3. Advise on corporate governance matters, including board and committee structures, working closely with Compliance.
  4. Lead and support junior team members, promoting engagement and career development aligned with the Law and Compliance Department’s target operating model.
  5. Identify legal risks within the business and work with teams to manage them.
  6. Liaise with outside counsel on various matters, ensuring compliance and cost-effectiveness.
  7. Assist or lead projects on process improvements, risk mitigation, and legal policies.
  8. Collaborate across Aon to drive initiatives and embody core values.
  9. Ensure the UK Commercial Risk legal team is well-structured, efficient, and responsive, supporting career growth and personal development.
  10. Report to Law leadership, updating on key matters and collaboration.
  11. Support all Aon business lines in the UK and internationally, with opportunities for growth and influence.
Skills and experience that will lead to success
  • Qualified to practice law in the UK with a practicing certificate.
  • Strong understanding of the London market and UK financial services regulation.
  • Experience in commercial legal teams, with skills in drafting, negotiation, and communication.
  • Excellent collaboration and communication skills.
