Job summary

Open Cosmos in the United Kingdom is seeking a Software Engineer to join our Data team and translate ground-based image processing into efficient, orbit-ready code that runs on Nvidia Jetson hardware.

You will build and optimise onboard data pipelines, collaborate with flight software and data teams, and help shape power/memory/thermal-aware software design. This is a mission-driven company pushing space tech forward.

Qualifications

• Strong Python skills for data processing, with clean, testable code.
• Hands-on experience with embedded Linux and ARM-based hardware.
• Experience with GPU computing and CUDA on Nvidia platforms.
• Ability to profile, debugging and optimize code on constrained hardware.
• Experience turning scientific code into production software.
• Understanding of power, memory, storage and thermal constraints on software design.
• Experience designing data pipelines, data formats and metadata standards.
• Familiarity with geospatial or image libraries (GDAL, Rasterio, NumPy, Xarray).
• Good habits: testing, version control and code reviews.
• Clear communication and ability to explain trade-offs to engineers and non-engineers.

Responsibilities

• Building and maintaining the data processing pipelines that run on satellites' Nvidia Jetson computers.
• Adapting image processing algorithms to run in orbit with the same results.
• Speeding up processing with GPU acceleration and profiling on ARM/GPU hardware.
• Collaborating with ground-based Data Software Engineer to share improvements.
• Building quality checks so onboard data is ready for customers.
• Setting and maintaining data and metadata standards for outputs.
• Building, testing and deploying data workflows in embedded Linux with version control.
• Trying new processing techniques and data types for onboard workflows.
• Working with Flight Software, Systems and Operations teams and payload partners.
