Job description

About Davidson-Watts Ecology Ltd

Davidson-Watts Ecology Ltd (DWE) is a specialist ecological consultancy with a strong reputation for delivering high-quality ecological advice, surveys, and solutions. We work with a wide range of clients including developers, conservation NGOs, local authorities/statutory agencies, and private landowners. We are leaders in the use of novel approaches to survey, assessment and mitigation, underpinned by our own in-house research and development programme. Our ethos is to combine scientific rigour with practical, client focussed outcomes, to promote sustainable development and nature recovery.

Role Purpose

As Ecology Project Coordinator you will have a central role in our project delivery, making sure the right people, equipment and information are in the right place at the right time. Working closely with our project managers, ecologists and specialist subcontractors, you will help plan and resource our survey programme so that projects run smoothly from inception to completion. The role is well suited to someone who wants to stay connected to ecology and project delivery, but who prefers an office-based, organisational role.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide operational support to project managers, including planning, scheduling and resourcing ecological surveys, managing access, site contacts, equipment, and preparing health and safety documentation.
  • liaise with clients, subcontractors and site staff to arrange site access, survey timings, and logistics.
  • Workforce management, including onboarding of staff and subcontractors, and maintaining personnel records.
  • Manage a database (CRM) of specialist subcontractors, including maintain records of insurance, competencies and relevant licences, where applicable.
  • Coordinate survey equipment bookings and manage servicing and maintenance of equipment.
  • Manage data handover from staff and subcontractors in the field, including survey forms, photographs, maps, etc., and undertake initial quality assurance of data to ensure survey data are complete and organised.
  • Assist with formatting and delivery of reports to meet internal and client standards.
  • Support project financial administration: track purchase orders, subcontractor costs and timesheets.
  • Support business development activities, such as preparing tender documents or proposals.
Essential Criteria
  • Previous experience within an ecology or environmental consultancy environment.
  • Good understanding of ecological survey work and consultancy processes.
  • Excellent organisational and time-management skills, with the ability to prioritise under pressure.
  • Experience coordinating or supporting multiple projects at once in a consultancy or similar client-facing setting.
  • Experience scheduling fieldwork and resources around seasonal survey windows.
  • Strong written communication, including the ability to review reports for clarity, accuracy and consistency.
  • Confident verbal communication with clients, subcontractors, local planning authorities and internal teams.
  • Confidence using Microsoft Office (particularly Excel) and project management or scheduling systems.
  • Attention to detail and a methodical approach to record-keeping and quality control.
  • Able to commute to Bristol office (Westbury-on-Trym).
Desirable Criteria
  • A degree in ecology, environmental science, biology, conservation or a related subject, or equivalent professional experience.
  • Experience with GIS software and field data collection apps.
  • Commercial awareness, including experience with fee proposals, tendering or invoicing.
  • Knowledge of Health and Safety procedures for fieldwork, including lone working and risk assessments.
What We Offer
  • Competitive salary dependent on experience.
  • Annual performance bonus and special bonus awards.
  • Hybrid working with flexibility to balance office, home, and site-based work.
  • Unlimited ongoing professional development and training.
  • Opportunities to work on diverse and high-profile projects, including work in New Zealand and the Pacific.
  • A supportive, collaborative, and friendly working environment within a growing consultancy.
