Job summary

Jacobs in the UK is seeking ecologists to join our ecology team, with opportunities across Edinburgh, Glasgow and other offices. You will work on challenging infrastructure projects, combining field surveys and desk assessments to support water, highway and rail schemes.

You will collaborate in multidisciplinary teams, engage with clients and regulators, and contribute to environmental impact assessments and Biodiversity Net Gain efforts.

Qualifications

  • Background in terrestrial ecology with relevant industry experience.
  • Associate membership of Chartered Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management (CIEEM) or equivalent.
  • Experience as an ecology surveyor and field scientist.
  • Ability to write clear, concise reports.
  • Inquisitive with strong willingness to learn.
  • Team player with good self-awareness.
  • A hands-on work ethic.

Responsibilities

  • Deliver ecology input on large infrastructure projects across the UK.
  • Perform desk and field tasks with UK travel and occasional away-from-home stays.
  • Apply expertise in protected species surveys, EIA, and Biodiversity Net Gain.
  • Work within multidisciplinary teams to integrate terrestrial ecology requirements.
  • Engage with clients, regulators and external stakeholders.

We have ecology teams based across the UK and would welcome applicants to our offices Edinburgh, Glasgow.

The role will include
  • Delivering some of the most challenging, diverse and innovative infrastructure projects. Presently, we are engaged on a variety of large projects including water infrastructure, highway and rail schemes, energy infrastructure for clients such as Anglian Water, National Highways, National Grid, Network Rail, Thames Water, The Environment Agency, Transport Scotland and a number of local authorities.
  • A combination desk and site-based tasks – there will be a requirement to work across the UK and at times, stay away from home during the working week.
  • Using your experience in protected species survey, Ecological Clerk of Works, Environmental Impact Assessment, Habitats Regulations Assessment and Biodiversity Net Gain.
  • Working in multidisciplinary teams – quickly building rapport and trust to ensure that terrestrial ecology requirements are recognised, acknowledged and constraints acted upon.
  • Engagement with both internal and external clients, customers and environmental regulators.
Here's what you'll need
  • A background in terrestrial ecology with relevant industry experience including technical reporting and impact assessment in cognisance of national legislation and guidance.
  • Associate membership of Chartered Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management (or similar, or experience to obtain membership)
  • An experienced ecology surveyor and a good field scientist
  • Ability to write clear and concise reports
  • Inquisitiveness and willingness to learn.
  • The ability to work well as part of a team.
  • A 'hands on' work ethic and good self-awareness.
Ideally you'll also have
  • Current and full driving licence.
  • A technical specialism in the field of terrestrial ecology. We are particularly keen to build upon our expertise in habitats, birds and ornithology. However, if that's not you, but you have broad experience and ability to pick up other ecological interests quickly, we'd love to hear from you too!
